

Joann Martha Burling of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away April 8, 2026, at the age of 89. Born December 21, 1936, at the hospital in Seward, Nebraska, Joann was the daughter of Walter and J. Hildegarde (Bender) Brauer. She grew up on the family farm east of Garland, and throughout her life she remained an adventurous spirit who took advantage of many things to stay busy and enjoy life.
Joann was baptized January 10, 1937, and confirmed June 4, 1950, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malcolm, Nebraska. She graduated from Garland High School in 1954. She sang in the Seward church choir and took part in field archery and shooting competitions, winning many medals for her accuracy. She competed with Nebraska Prairie Bowmen and Prairie Bowmen - Lincoln.
Joann married Larry Burling on July 17, 1965, at St. John's Lutheran church in Seward, Nebraska. They made their home on an acreage north of Malcolm, Nebraska. She worked a number of years for A.C. Nielsen Marketing Research in Lincoln.
Larry and Joann traveled 46 states and Canada, fished for salmon on trips to Alaska and Canada, and wintered in Texas. She also enjoyed gardening, canning things she grew, baking, family genealogy, reading, fishing, and crocheting—making blankets for all nieces and nephews. A devoted Nebraska Cornhusker fan, she especially loved the volleyball team and enjoyed the season the 2025-26 men's basketball team had.
Joann was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Malcolm, as well as JAYCO International Travel Club, and belonged to several card clubs.
Joann was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; her parents; and her brother, Gerald Brauer. She is survived by brothers-in-law Dean Burling and Wayne (Rose) Burling, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska, on April 15, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
Funeral Service will be held at St Paul's Lutheran Church, 375 Lincoln Street, Malcolm, Nebraska, on April 16, 2026, at 10:30 am. Luncheon will be served at the church following the service.
Burial will be held at Lincoln Memorial Park and Cemetery, 6700 South 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska, on April 16, 2026, at 2:30 pm. Family and friends will be meeting at gate #2 prior to the service.
