John A Skinner, 96, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025. A steadfast presence in the lives of all who knew him, John devoted himself to his family, his community, and his country, leaving behind a legacy defined by hard work, devotion, and creativity.
Born on February 27, 1929, in Adams, Nebraska, to Flossie (Motter) Skinner and Alva R Skinner. His youth was spent in Adams, Nebraska and Willow Springs, Missouri, where he and his brothers Alden and Arlo explored, adventured, and occasionally got into mischief, as boys will do. As a result, John grew up learning the values of responsibility and service that shaped his life. These values were further cultivated during his service with the United States Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948, followed by over 30 years with the Nebraska Air National Guard. During this time he also found his full time employment with the United States Postal Service, where his dependability and tenacity made him a respected colleague and friend.
John married the love of his life, Marcella (Sally) Rempel, on January 2, 1959. Their wedding was a double wedding with Marcella’s beloved sister, Vi, and John’s friend, Ralph Harper, and was celebrated surrounded by family and friends. Together they shared more than five decades of partnership, weathering life’s joys and challenges hand in hand until Marcella’s passing in 2015. John remained devoted to Marcella, especially during her later years, providing unwavering support and care.
Outside of work and family life, John was an avid and accomplished woodworker, golfer, and ceramics enthusiast. He brought the same creativity that defined his character into everything he made, conquering challenges with resourcefulness and dedication. His passion for craft lives on in the many projects-and memories-he leaves behind.
Faith was a cornerstone of John’s life. He was deeply involved in his church from an early age, faithfully attending, volunteering, and serving throughout his life. His hands-on support and quiet leadership enriched his congregation and community.
John will be lovingly remembered by his children Jonathan (Jill) Skinner, Mark (Cindy) Skinner, Merlin (Janine) Skinner, and Michelle (Richard) Schwahn, as well as his grandchildren Laura, Brandi, Jesse, John, Alisha, Samantha, Taylor, and Madeline, and several great grandchildren, extended family and friends. Because John lived to such an advanced age, he is certainly joined in rest by a welcoming party, including his loving wife, his parents, his brothers, and many other dear friends and family whose lives have been impacted by him.
A celebration of John’s life will be held Friday, October 3, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. John will be laid to rest, alongside Marcella, in Lincoln Memorial Park and Cemetery. His family invites all who knew him to join in honoring a life well-lived—a life marked by dedication, integrity, and love.
