

LaVerne B. Johnson, 91, formerly of Crete (and Dorchester), passed away peacefully Sept. 23, 2014 in Friend, NE. Born Oct. 6, 1922 in Friend, NE to Charles and Frances (Kubicek) Vavra. In 1943, she married Glenn E. Johnson while he was stationed in Baltimore, Maryland with the U.S. Coast Guard. In that union, were born three children. LaVerne taught at a Friend rural school in her early years and later worked at Formfit-Rogers in Crete. She was active in the Miriam Circle of the United Methodist Church and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary in Crete where she held various offices. Volunteering at the Crete Hospital became a regular activity that she enjoyed. LaVerne belonged to a bowling league where she won several trophies, loved dancing, polka music, gardening, and made the best kolaches. Preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, brother Stanley and sister Sylvia. Survivors: daughter, Paulette and husband Mark DeWitt, Lincoln, NE; son, Jan and wife Ingrid of Castle Rock, CO; son, Rex and wife Terri of Colorado Springs, CO; and sisters, Evelyn Korinek of Friend, NE; Ellaurine Klasek of Western, NE; and Jean Skala of Crete, NE. The family would like to express gratitude for the loving care by Friend Manor and AceraCare Hospice. Services: 1 p.m Sunday, Oct. 12 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. No visitation.
