Michael D Holmquist

Mike Holmquist, 80, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, April 21st, 2026, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Lincoln. He was born on December 15th, 1945, in Oakland, Nebraska to David Anderson and Marilyn (Larson) Holmquist.

He graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1964. He later attended Utah State University in his 30’s and received a degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics. He worked in the field of semiconductors in Utah, Idaho, and New England before finally returning home to Lincoln and becoming an Environmental Engineer for the Lincoln and Lancaster County Health Department, where he later retired.

As a young man, he was a dedicated Eagle Scout. He later served in the forestry service in Idaho. He was a talented trombone and piano player. He rediscovered a passion for watercolor painting in the final years of his life and had his first art show in early March. He was an immaculate gardener, adventurous cook, and had a playful sense of humor. He had an adventurous mind and tried his hand at everything from wholesaling Persian rugs to collecting Audubon prints.

He is survived by Laura, his wife of 48 years, his sons, Clifton of Alaska, Benjamin (Danielle) of Montana, Max of Nebraska, siblings Jodee Hofer of Utah, Hal (Joni) of Kansas, Don (Jill) of Nebraska, Jim (Denise) of New Mexico, granddaughters Zayda Gagnon of Alaska and Jovie Holmquist of Montana, extended family, dear friends, and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his father, David Anderson, mother, Marilyn Holmquist, and sister, Marsha Holmquist. His absence will be deeply felt by those who knew and loved him.

A service will be held at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church located at 1015 Lancaster Lane, Lincoln, Nebraska, on Tuesday, April 28th at 11 am. Lunch will follow. In lieu of flowers, consider donations in his name to Lincoln City Libraries, Capital Humane Society, People’s City Mission, or the Lincoln Food Bank.
