Mildred Patricia Fish was born at home on the farm in North Loup, Nebraska on August 27, 1928 to Ira Devillo and Ethel Mae (Kasson) Fish, one of 8 children. She attended the Olean one room schoolhouse and graduated from Ord high school. Mildred married Lewis Clyde Hoobler in Broken Bow, Nebraska on August 19, 1947. They first met at a dance and celebrated 73 years of marriage before Lewis passed in 2021. She is the loving mother of 7, grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 12. She died September 10, 2025. She was 97 years old and is gone too soon.
Mildred retired from Lincoln Public Schools District Office, having worked in the accounting department for 23 years. She also regularly sold tickets at Seacrest Field and other LPS athletic events.
She was a wonderful volunteer, especially after retirement. She shelved books at Gere Library for over 10 years, helped in the Lincoln Community Playhouse box office and was a long time supporter for the VFW 3606 auxiliary. She crocheted baby hats for newborns at Saint Elizabeth‘s hospital and received an award from them crediting her for 12,500 volunteer hours. She annually made hundreds of yummy holiday cookies for the Lincoln Regional Center clients.
This left-handed woman was a lifetime expert seamstress, including making Terri Lee doll clothes, sewing clothing and creating Christmas stockings for her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, famous for her roast beef, lasagna, and pfefferneuse. She loved to read, watch all sports (in person and on TV), and do crossword puzzles daily until the end of her life.
She enjoyed many Husker games and world travels with Lewis, and bowled for most of her adult years.
Mildred and Lewis were charter members of South Gate United Methodist Church in 1964 and served in various capacities over the years.
We are thankful to Rev. Amy Slater for her hospital and home visits and cards from her church friends. We also thank CHI home health and hospice care team.
Her son Brian cared for her, allowing her to live in her own home until her passing.
