On May 26, 2025, Roger Schreiner, age 79, went home to be with his Savior, a week after being admitted to Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln, NE. He was continuously surrounded by friends and family until he went to be with Jesus.
Roger was born on January 17, 1946 in Lincoln, NE, to Estelle and John Schreiner. His mother was his kindergarten teacher while he attended Calvary Lutheran School. Tragically, Roger lost his mother when he was 11, then lost his father at age 16. His only brother, Chuck, became his guardian. After graduating from Lincoln High he spent a summer surveying in Poudre Canyon, CO. He said it was one of the best summers of his life. He wanted to keep working for the forest service but he knew his parents wanted him to go to college so he returned to Lincoln and enrolled at the University of Nebraska. Roger was drafted April 21,1966 and after basic training he boarded a ship with the destination of Vietnam. In later years he would tell hilarious stories of a major storm that caused the ship’s latrines to overflow and made stairwells a slippery mess. He was wounded in Vietnam and received a Purple Heart and was honorably released from service in 1968. Because of the unrest over the war he traveled back to Nebraska in civilian clothes and never talked much about Vietnam. On May of 2017, almost 50 years later, he went on the honor flight to Washington D.C. with other Vietnam Veteran's and received a wonderful welcome home with crowds cheering, clapping, and holding signs, ‘Welcome Home’. He was deeply touched by the experience.
After returning to Nebraska Roger went back into the workforce and worked at Square D. His supervisor strongly encouraged Roger to get his degree. He took his advice and graduated with a bachelor's in business from the University of Nebraska.
In 1976 Roger and his buddy Marlin started a construction company. In 1978 many changes took place. The Gospel of salvation through Jesus was presented to him and one day at a job site he knelt down under a tree and said “Jesus, if you are real, and I believe you are, and if you died for my sins, and I believe you did, why am I living like I am?” It was THE defining moment of his life. Several months later he married Rosanna. Shortly after getting married, he made a shift in professions and took the Nebraska Realtor exam. He was hired as a real estate agent by Jerry Schlegel of Austin Realty at a time when interest rates were 15%. In 2020, after 42 successful years of selling homes he retired from Home Realty. He loved helping people and many of his clients became lifelong friends.
Roger was very involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship and served on the State Board for many years. Most of his children received training each year and became summer missionaries, teaching Five Day Clubs in communities throughout NE. But, mostly he was invested in his family. He loved camping and fishing and each year he’d drive his family to Long Pine State Recreation area where we would tube the cold spring fed creek and fish for trout. He also loved taking his family to the Rockies.
In 2017 he felt his memory wasn’t working as well as it should and after many tests he was diagnosed with early onset of Alzheimer’s. Roger and Rosanna have taken turns taking care of each other and would often joke that she had the brain and he had the brawn and together they made one fine person.
Roger is survived by his wife, Rosanna; children, Amanda Gurnsey, Paul Schreiner, Daniel Schreiner (Liz), Nick Schreiner (Rodneka) and Karlie Schreiner; his brother Chuck. He is also survived by his first wife, Dixie; their three children, John Schreiner, Lisa Schreiner and Scott Schreiner. Survived also by 15 granddaughters and 5 grandsons.
Visitation, Friday, May 30, 2025, from 4-8pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Funeral services are Saturday, May 31st at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home at 2 pm. Please join us for a luncheon after the graveside service at Horizon Community Church at 3200 Grainger Parkway, Lincoln.
