

Sharolyn Kaye (Hopken) Frey was born on January 3, 1945 , to Alvin and Blanche (Hamouz) Hopken. She was baptized on April 22, 1945, confirmed on December 15th, 1957, and married on September 8, 1973 at Grace Lutheran Church in Ohiowa, NE.
Sharolyn's mother, Blanche, passed away on September 2, 1948 due to medical problems she had before giving birth to her twin sisters, Sandra and Randra. On July 30, 1950, Sharolyn's father remarried Gladys Ferguson from Exeter and was blessed with a daughter Georgia, on May 16th, 1952.
Sharolyn graduated from Bruning High School in 1963 with a scholarship to attend Fairbury Junior College. After graduating from FJC, she started her teaching career in Davenport, NE. In 1966 she moved to Lincoln to further her education at the University of Nebraska and graduated in 1970. After receiving her teacher's degree she taught at Schuyler, NE; Sterling, NE. St. Mary's Catholic School in Livingston, MT; and St. Mary's Catholic School, in Lincoln, NE. She also was a substitute teacher at Saratoga Elementary School. At each of these schools she took a personal interest in each one of her students.
On September 8, 1973, Sharolyn was united in Christian marriage to Robert Kenneth Frey. The Lord blessed them with two sons; Jeffrey who was born on December 24, 1976 and Corwin who was born on June 16, 1979. In September of 2023 they were blessed to be able to celebrate their 50th Anniversary with friends and relatives.
The family moved to Livingston, MT in 1981 due to Robert's employment. This is when Sharolyn and Robert fell in love with Montana. They returned to Lincoln, NE in 1985. Since moving back to Lincoln, they have vacationed to Montana every summer to visit friends and their son Jeffrey and his family.
Sharolyn and Robert are members at St. Paul, United Methodist Church (UMC). Sharolyn was very active at St. Paul where she served on the Executive Board of the United Women in Faith as their Courtesy Chairman, (sending out various cards to the members), attended Book Club, Paine Parlor Sunday Class, Bible Study Groups, and Ladies Luncheon Groups, and volunteered in many other areas. Sharolyn was a current member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Havelock Post 342. Sharolyn also attended Bible Study Groups at St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
Sharolyn enjoyed playing the piano and accordion, watching movies, game shows, soaps, and reading books. She especially enjoyed spending time with her six (6) grandchildren along with her family. She was a cancer survivor of approximately 20 years and lived her life to the fullest.
On July 9, 2025, Sharolyn passed away at age 80, in Red Lodge, MT after a brief illness. She is survived by her spouse, Robert; son Jeffrey (Kim) Frey and 2 children Frederick and Alexaundria; son Corwin (Kris) and 4 children Claire, Emily, John, and Ben; sisters Sandra (Mike) Miller, Randra Hansen, and Georgia Thomas; brother-in-law David (Debbie) Frey; sister-in-law Gloria (Jay) Morehead; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many other beloved relatives.
Sharolyn was preceded in death by her parents, parents-in-laws, great-grandparents, brother-in-law, and many beloved relatives.
Memorials to be given to Grace Lutheran Church, Ohiowa, NE, and/or to St. Paul's UMC.
A visitation will be held on Sunday July 20, 2025 from 4:00-7:00 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S 14th St., Lincoln, NE 68512. A memorial service will take place at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Monday, July 21st at 10:00 a.m, 1144 M St., Lincoln, NE 68508.
