

He was born September 11, 1921 to Orris and Esther (Chambers) Cheney on a farm west of Bennet, Nebraska. He graduated from Bennet High School in 1939. He was drafted into the Army on August 1, 1944 and served in the East Dutch Indies, Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Ruby Schaefer on October 4, 1951 and they resided on the family farm west of Bennet. From this union came four children.
He was a farmer and a mechanic, and had a love of Case tractors, small antique gas engines, Polka music, hand cornhusking, and family. He was a member of the Bennet American Legion Post #280 where he served as a member of the honor guard for many years, VFW, Camp Creek Threshers, Bennet Community Church, J.I. Case Association, and served on the Farmer's Co-op Elevator Board.
He is survived by his children Arlene (Ron) Dowding, Janet (Alan) Baldwin, Dennis (Judy) Cheney, and Lois (Larry) Essink; grandchildren Jana (Brad) Docter, Nathan (Lisa) Dowding, Chad (Cassandra) Baldwin, Brandi (Kevin) Pflughaupt, Amanda (Pat) Lahm, Ethan Essink, Thomas (Elizabeth) Cheney, Tess Cheney, Jamie (Jarod) Velte, and Kara (Quinn) Beecham; and great-grandchildren Bailey, Tayler, Sydney, and Dillon Docter, Hailey, Tinley, and Piper Dowding, Ruby and Kale Pflughaupt, Elijah and Ezra Baldwin, Hope and Mary Cheney, Barrett and Baylor Beecham, Dalton Essink and Pete Lahm; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruby, brothers and sisters-in-laws Dale and Mabel, Glenn and Letha, Eugene and Esther, Raymond and Lowell Cheney, infant sister Francis Cheney and sister Eilene Renter. Grandson Justin Cheney and brother-in-law Henry Kirchhoff Jr.
Visitation to be held on Monday, July 10, 2023 from 6-8 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. Celebration of life scheduled for Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at 10:30 am at Bennet Community Church, 350 Monroe St, Bennet, Nebraska.
