Pete was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Peter and Mary (née Pratti) Cavaliere. He was the beloved husband of Mary Cavaliere (née Cyktor), with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Peter Cyktor, Michael Cyktor and wife Patty; and his nephews Matthew and Michael Cyktor.
He attended St. Augustine High School in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from St. John’s University in Queens, New York. He also held two master’s degrees. Pete worked in the New York City school system as a teacher until his retirement.
Pete’s passion was chess. He served as a past president of the Staten Island Chess Club and was also a chess instructor. He was honored for his dedication, and in addition to receiving a plaque for his service, he was awarded “Lifetime Member” status — a tradition established by Albert B. Hodges, founder of the oldest chess club in the city.
Pete was a kind and warm person who would go out of his way to help anyone in need — whether a stranger or a friend, he always did what he could to lend a hand. He enjoyed watching old movies and spending time playing chess. Pete never had a bad word to say about anyone.
