Doris Ada Rand Smith has left her pain behind forever. She was just weeks away from 98 years. A longtime resident of Lisbon and Lisbon Falls, she spent the last few years at Woodlands Senior Living in Hallowell. Her last night, Wednesday, December 3, 2025, was at the Maine Veterans Home in Augusta.
Born on December 23, 1927, in Auburn, ME, she was the sixth and youngest child of Everett L. Rand and Phyllis Whitehouse Rand. She and her siblings – Joyce, Phillip, Roland, Glen, and Ruth – made it thru the Great Depression on a farm at Danville Junction.
The last to leave that household, she graduated from Edward Little High School and moved to Washington, D.C. to work for the U.S. Navy as a clerk/secretary. Here she met Jesse O. Smith, Jr. (USAF) and soon started her new family. David was the first born followed by Gary, who survived only one day, Connie, and Randy.
As dependents of an Air Force Master Sergeant, the Smiths were transferred around the country every few years. The great adventure started in 1958 as we all moved to Wiesbaden, Germany. We all took our first trips on airplanes. She was a bit relieved when we stopped for fuel in Shannon, Ireland. She dragged us to the airport bar where she ordered an Irish Coffee. The first and only time we saw her drink alcohol! With the help of USAF, she encouraged her children to experience this new-to-us old culture. She also maintained households in Ohio, Missouri, Indianna, Massachusetts, and lastly Texas, before settling back in Maine.
Now separated from Jesse, she found her perfect job as a secretary at Bates Manufacturing in Lewiston, ME. She retired just as the mill closed.
Her priority in life was her extended family. She focused on them and kept us all connected.
She is survived by her son David P. Smith and his wife Kathleen T. Sikora, her daughter Constance Smith Stroud, and Randall G. Smith. Grandchildren Heidi Smith and partner Fletcher Atkinson, Adam Smith, April Hartman and husband Tom, Elizabeth Rogers and husband Stephen, Tyler Smith and wife Lori, Mindy Gungor and husband Karem, Benjamin Smith, many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Jesse, son Gary, parents, Everett and Phyllis, siblings Joyce, Phillip, Roland, Glen, and Ruth.
A get-together will be held at Crossman Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 10th, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Interment at the Danville Pine Street Cemetery will be in the spring.
