

BRUNSWICK – Margaret Smith, 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Mere Point Nursing Home in Brunswick. Margaret was born to Charles White and Laura (Moody) White on November 7, 1918 in Rumford, Maine. She had 4 brothers, Leslie Allison, Oscar, Ernest and John; three sisters, Bess, Grace and Barbara Alice; a ninth child, Jean Frances, died at nine months of age.
She attended Rumford schools and graduated from Lisbon High School after a move to Lisbon Falls. After high school she worked as a telephone operator. She attended a dance with her sister, Bess, where she met Carroll Lauriston Smith. She and Carroll married in 1940. With the help of Carroll’s father, Eugene, they built a home in Topsham. There they ran a hot dog stand beside their home (making the best french fries according to her sister, Barbara) until Carroll was drafted into the Army in 1943. Their first child, Carroll A., was born in 1943 and daughter, Ann Margaret, in 1945.
Margaret was a devoted wife and mother. She and Carroll bought land on Stover’s Point in Harpswell and built a cottage which they enjoyed with their family for many years.
They were involved in the blueberry business, raking and selling locally for many years. Margaret enjoyed watching her birds and sewing.
In their later years they traveled extensively including Africa, Europe, China, Nepal, India, Mexico and other Countries.
Carroll and Margaret served Meals on Wheels for twenty five years in the Brunswick, Topsham area.
After Carroll’s death in 2008, Margaret lived in assisted living at Mere Point Nursing Home at the Senior Center in Brunswick until her death.
She is survived by son, Carroll and his wife Lynne of Topsham; daughter, Ann and husband Jay Pickens of Topsham; granddaughter, Sally Brillant and husband Chris of Cundy’s Harbor, Maine; grandson, Mark Smith and wife Zakia of New York; granddaughter Joanna and husband Steve Mason of Poland, Maine; grandson Jeffrey and wife Aleta of Topsham; great-grandchildren, Ethan Mason of Poland, Maine, Alexis Pickens and Amanda Pickens of Topsham, Noah Brillant, Jacob Brillant, Madison Brillant, and Benjamin Brillant of Cundy’s Harbor, Maine.
