

LEWISTON: Philip Hartwell, 87, died October 3, 2012 in Lewiston, Maine from cancer. Phil was born in the same city on August 2, 1925 the son of the late Philip and Mae (Sylvester) Hartwell. He attended Lisbon schools and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school where he served in the South Pacific. As a staff sergeant he supervised the repair of fighter aircraft. After the war, Phil moved between Maine and Southern California before finally settling in Maine in the late ‘50s. He married his lifelong sweetheart Evelyn in 1947 and they remained married for 62 years until she passed away in 2011. Phil was employed at BNAS and retired as a firefighter. He continued to work as a security guard at LL Bean and Sears before finally retiring at age 76.
Phil loved aviation and was a pilot at age 16. He loved aircraft throughout his life and owned 2 airplanes. He loved the outdoors and visiting the ocean and state parks until the very end of his life. He also loved the small creatures, cats, dogs and birds as well as babies and young children. He recently became the proud great grandfather to Lincoln Kent. He was a faithful member of the Lisbon Falls Baptist Church. He believed in physical fitness, fiscal responsibility and was a fearless traveler, seeing Europe, Asia, Canada and the US all after he became 60. He traveled until the end, visiting Nevada, Oregon and NYC the last year of his life. Phil is survived by his two children Ann Barbay and her husband Don of Lisbon and John Hartwell and his wife Karen Rohrbacher of South Portland, granddaughter Jessica Barbay and her husband Benjamin Kent and their son Lincoln Kent. HARTWELL--- Philip L., 87, died October 3rd in Lewiston. A funeral service will be held on Friday October 5th, 2012 at 11am at the Lisbon Falls Baptist Church in Lisbon Falls.
