Arthur M. Felix was a Research Scientist and Educator born in the Bronx, New York. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry at New York University and the Ph.D. at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now Polytechnic Institute of New York University).
Dr. Felix spent a 2-year postdoctoral period with Professor E. J. Corey at Harvard University (1964-1966) where he received an N.I.H. Postdoctoral Fellowship. After joining Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. (Nutley, New Jersey) in 1966 he spent a sabbatical at Rockefeller University (Guest Investigator) with Professor R. During his research career, Dr. Felix authored more than 180 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 30 U.S. and foreign patents and received the Vincent duVigneaud Award in 1996 for research contributions to peptide chemistry. He was co-Editor of the 5-Volume compendium, Synthesis of Peptides & Peptidomimetics published by Houben-Weyl (2001-2003) and co-Producer/Editor of the video Peptide & Protein Synthesis: Origin and Development which reviews 100 years of peptide science [©American Peptide Society (2001)].
Dr. Felix was a co-Founder of the American Peptide Society (1990) and served on its Board of Directors and on numerous editorial boards including International Journal of Peptide & Protein Research, Peptide Science, Journal of Peptide Research and Analytical Biochemistry. Following his retirement from Roche in 1996 he joined Ramapo College of New Jersey where he taught courses in organic chemistry, biochemistry and medicinal chemistry and served as a research mentor for many research students. He received the Fred and Florence Thomases Faculty Award (2006) for teaching, scholarship and service and was selected as a Distinguished Member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (2011). He retired from Ramapo College in 2012 (Emeritus Professor) and was an Emeritus Member of the American Chemical Society.
