My deepest condolences on the loss of Bette, my dearest friend from long ago Newark and Weequahic High School. So many wonderful memories of laughter and good times together. I was so happy when she and I reconnected several years ago. Fifty years evaporated in one email. I will treasure her friendship and the memories forever.


Bette was a unique individual.  I sewed with Bette for four years at Retired Senior Volunteer Services. We shared a table and many long hours of conversation.  She showed my many of the afghans and quilts that she made before sending them on to family members and taught me to knit bed socks for seniors.  We laughed together, shared stories, shared bits of our lives.  I will greatly miss her.

Of all my cousins, Bette was the one with whom I remained closest. She was my source of news about my relatives on the Asher side of the family, whether they were in New Jersey, the DC area, North Carolina, Florida, or Israel.  Bette had a genuine sense of family and the importance of staying connected. She was a warm and  sharing person who could be counted on to keep a conversation going as she told family stories both recent or from decades ago.  We had not seen each other since the pandemic began, but it was very reassuring that she and Peter were in Indiana, only one state away from Ohio, and close enough for a personal visit that now sadly will not happen.

...and to add to my message about Bette....Since I hadn't seen Bette, Herb, and their family since 1957, I never knew that she was married to Peter Livingston, until the other day.  The "small-world" coincidence, is that Peter Livingston was a senior at Newark Academy when I was an 8th grader...and I remember him as an incredibly kind, smart and humble guy. Bette was a person I always enjoyed and got a big kick out of, when we were kids!  Assertive and decisive before those words were "in" words.  And a very likable and highly intelligent, dynamic person.  We go back to  when we were young kids playing on Baldwin Avenue in Newark.  Her dad, Nat, was the most modest, humble, hard-working guy on the street.  Her mom, Mildred,  was a lovable, take charge mother whose banana cake was "award-winning."  Her Brother, Herbie, was a buddy of mine, a bit older, and a foot taller than me in those days...and I even remember their grandpa.   My mom & dad loved the Segal's!  What a wonderful family.  And what a great loss.  Bette was a special person.  Thanks all, and be well...Roger Flax

Bette and Peter have been wonderful friends to the Ogle Center, greeting our patrons for many years.  My mother attended a performance at the Kentucky Center where Bette and Peter were volunteering, and she told them about the Ogle Center and that we needed more volunteers.  Bette and Peter have been loyal volunteers  and a tremendous help to us and our patrons.  We will greatly miss seeing her at the Ogle Center.  We will continue to keep your family in our thoughts and are sending you prayers for peace and comfort.

Bette introduced my husband and I to the joys of volunteering at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts.  I admired her enthusiasm for life and her indomitable spirit. She embraced life's opportunities. 
She will be missed.   

I shared many a night with Bette as we were both volunteers at the KY Center For the Performing Arts. I loved her stories, her wit, her book recommendations and her knitting. She was dedicated and such an arts enthusiast. I miss her already.

Bette and her husband were great Ogle Center volunteers.  The Livingstons  handled Orchestra Right while the Cresses  took care of Orchestra Left.  Many patrons will miss Bette, as will the IUS Staff.
