Born and raised in Newark, NJ, he graduated from Weequahic High School in 1952, served two years in Korea with the U.S. Army, then received his bachelor's degree from Upsala College in 1959. He married Patricia Meltzer and the couple moved to Livingston in 1962, where they started a family and have resided ever since.
Throughout his life, Burt was active in athletics. He played basketball, football and baseball in recreational leagues in Newark and Livingston. Rivaling his passion for sports was his passion for politics. A staunch Democrat, he was elected to the Livingston Democratic County Committee in 1972, where he served until his death. During the course of his political career, he attended five national Democratic conventions. He also served for many years on the Livingston Recreation Advisory Committee.
After a long corporate career at Wakefern Food Corp., he went on to become the director of the Economic Development Corp. of Essex County, and then served as the county's Head of Vendor Administration until retirement.
Burt is survived and loved by many, including wife, Essex County Freeholder Patricia Sebold, son Howard and his wife Shayna, daughter Risa Schreiber and her husband Bruce, five grandchildren: Jonathan, Nicole, Jack Schreiber, and Ayla and Holden Sebold, and an abundance of close relatives and friends.
A memorial service will celebrate Burton’s life at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018 at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Rd., Livingston, NJ 07039.
