
Edmund C. Spelman III, 56, of Short Hills, N.J., passed away on September 14, 2013. Beloved husband of Renee (Braitman), proud father of Daniel, William, David and Andrew, devoted son of Elsie Spelman and the late Edmund C Spelman, Jr., cherished brother of Le-ellen (George) Doty and Lisa (Mark) Molisani, wonderful son-in-law of Vivian Braitman and the late Dr. Robert Braitman, adored uncle to Jed, Chris and Elizabeth Doty, Michael and Christin Molisani, and Gregory and Rachel Braitman. He is also survived by a loving extended family and many friends.
Edmund was born in Montclair, N.J. on April 2, 1957. He grew up in West Orange and graduated from West Orange High School in 1975. He graduated with a B.A. and M.S. from The University of Pennsylvania. It was at graduate school at Penn that he met the love of his life, Renee Braitman. They celebrated thirty years of blissful marriage earlier this year. Ed's family was the most important aspect of his life and he took enormous pride in his four sons, Daniel, born in 1985 and triplets William, David and Andrew, born in 1991.
Ed retired from MacKay Shields in 2009 where he was a Senior Managing Director, Portfolio Manager and Member of the Advisory Committee. He was a man of enormous intellect, wide-ranging interests, extraordinary compassion and had a sharp sense of humor.He loved music, especially jazz, and was an accomplished saxophonist and drummer. Ed had appreciation of the simple pleasures of life, especially nature. His favorite activities were a walk in the woods, a visit to the beach or a stroll through Central Park. He was a voracious reader, of everything from tomes on astronomy to the latest fiction.
Most of all, Ed lived by example. He showed all those who had the pleasure to know and love him how to live life to the fullest, with grace, dignity and a boundless optimism in the human spirit.
Services will be held at 10:30 am on September 17th at Bernheim Apter Kreitzman in Livingston. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Edmund Spelman Scholarship Fund at The University of Pennsylvania or to the Millburn Free Public Library.
