Gerry was a leader in many ways - on our bike jaunts, or on our after-lunch walks around the big circle at Exxon.  It was hard to keep up with him on either activity.  He was also a caring, nice person.  I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and hoped to see him again.

I was so sad to hear the news of Gerry's passing. My heart breaks for you all. While I hoped to be there in person today, I was glad I was able to watch virtually. You all spoke so beautifully. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. May his memory be a blessing. Love, Shoshana 

Dear Karen and  Family,
I was virtually present at the funeral service. I want  to share with you a memory, a  scene, a  smile which it evoked. 

Gerry gently drew me into a road biking group of  men in their  60's. He  took care of  me.   He  made  sure I felt welcome  and  planned  safe  and  interesting routes. Our rides started in Morris Township or the Barons, and we rode west  or  southwest through beautiful, hilly farm or  ranch country and  rural villages. Although I was the  youngest of the group,  I struggled  to keep up with Gerry. I was not the lead. Gerry took the  lead except once when he  gave up that position. On that occasion, Gerry's phone sounded off, he raised his arm high so all could  see and  said loudly, " I have  to take this. It's  my broker." He pulled  to the  side. We all passed, and  he  caught up with us  shortly.  I still wonder whether he was joking, or  if  Exxon stock was  having a  hiccup.

We had so many good memories and connections with Karen and Gerry—Exxon events, bridge group, Barbara’s Brooklyn Dodger and then Mets obsessions, Japanese dinners together, Break-The-Fasts at your home and more. Gerry was a very special person.  We are so sad, and send our deepest condolences to Karen and Family on his sudden passing.

Even though we didn't see each other for years at a time, I and my sister Susan love Gerry, and Stuart, and Teddy. Growing up, We lived in Long Beach, close by to Rockville Center. We visited occasionally, and my mother Ruth, and aunt Helen talked almost everyday. Helen usually called at dinner time, just as we sat down to eat, and Captain Video and the Video Rangers show was starting on TV.  We tried to get them to hang up so we could eat, but usually we were not successful. Gerry, and Stuart, and Teddy were part of our youth, in a sense we grew up together. Gerry always, always had a smile for everybody around, They are all the kindest, nicest human beings. Even though I haven't seen him recently, I will miss him. We talked on the phone last week, and I will cherish that.

I have biked with Gerry on and off for many years, first around Basking Ridge, NJ, and then around Sarasota,  Fl, where we both have second homes. We shared an absolute passion for biking,  which did not diminish with age. We first met through a mutual friend, Ron Goldberg, who was also a biker.
Gerry was amazingly even-tempered: the only thing that seemed to get his dander up on a bike was an inconsiderate rider or biker. And he really enjoyed discussing almost anything under the sun, from politics - a real favorite to food and health. I will miss him and that wry wit.

Phyllis and I lived close  to Gerry and Karen, both in New Jersey and then in Sarasota.  It was in Florida that we became closer friends. Gerry was very kind to me and took me under his wing in guiding my progress in bridge.  We became partners and he had high standards to meet.  He was both annoyed and tolerant of my mistakes at the bridge table and I looked forward to our weekly bridge games.   Over time our friendship flourished and his wit and insight  will be sorely missed.  

Although we knew Gerry for only a short time, we shared a love
for cycling and Torah reading.  We experienced his joy in solving
problems, including fixing  brakes that were not functioning, and a
bike that refused to fit into the trunk of his car. (Fred)
Walking my long distances, I could always see from afar, Gerry coming in his favorite cap.  He always stopped to talk and had a good word.  Passing our garage, he always tipped his cap with a smile on his face.  We will miss him and his friendship.  Phyllis & Fred Nathan

We send sincere condolences to Gerry's family, Karen and his children, and grandchildren, and for us especially, to his brother Stu and his family, our closest friends from the years we spent together in East Northport and continuing to this very day.  We remember many happy times  at Carnegie Hall with Susan and Stu and Gerry and Karen where for years we had season subscriptions to the glorious Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, a wonderful dinner in Puerto Rico with Susan and Stu and Gerry's children when we were all there together, and catching up with Gerry at so many Lahn family simchas.  Gerry was a  true and decent man and he will be sorely missed.  Our deepest sympathy, Len & Emily Daykin.

Dear Karen and Family,
I didn't know Gerry well, we had the good fortune of spending good times together when you would be in NJ, but I learned a lot about him from Marty. Every word said at the funeral, Marty, at various times over the years has said to me about the dear friend Gerry was to him. He always spoke of his outstanding character and the kind, sweet and gentle man he was. 

So, I feel like I knew Gerry more than just our wonderful dinners together, and I want you to know my heart and thoughts are with you and the family for this most untimely loss.

Karen, we were so sorry to hear of Gerry’s passing. He was the best and the poster child of why we all loved working at Exxon. He was smart, articulate and caring.

As we participated in Gerry's memorial service there is nothing more to add to what has already been said by Karen, Meredith and all of the grandchildren except that may all of his shared beautiful memories all be blessings. Two memories of Gerry:

In 1966 our family (my father Ben was Willie's brother) came east from California to visit, after six years away from relatives. We went to visit Willie, Helen, Stuart, Gerry, and Teddy in Rockville Center. It was a raucous, exciting visit with everyone talking at once, but being 12, and everyone else 10 or more years older, I was a little lost. But Gerry saw this and did his best to make me feel  part of the family. My first real introduction to my cousin.


A year or so later, I don't remember the exact date, Gerry went into the Army and was sent to Fort Ord, about an hour south of where we lived.  He was able to get leave and we visited him there. I remember the family was obviously worried about where he might be assigned, but he seemed upbeat and happy, and confident that it would all work out in the end.

And so it did.

My condolences to Karen, Meredith and the Charak family and Jon and the Lahn family.  I have great memories of Gerry being a kind and gentle soul who was a great father and grandfather.  His legacy will live on.

John, Meredith, and Mrs. Lahn, we are so very sorry for your loss.  When my family life was not the best, you always accepted me with kindness and respect. Your family was always my model of a true ‘family’. Although there will be tough times, the remembrance of that bond, and connection that you had with your Dad, and your Husband, will sustain you, and nourish you.

We greatly valued Gerry's friendship over the years.  Loved hearing about Gerry's adventures with his landscaping committee at the Barons in Basking Ridge.   And we loved going out to eat with Karen and Gerry who were always adventurous diners.  Gerry was a wonderful bridge partner to Tom, and we enjoyed playing in bridge tournaments with both Gerry and Karen and visiting them in Florida.  We will miss Gerry.

Gerry was such a kind, gentle, good natured mensch. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Remembering Gerry fondly from sharing the same story when we visited each other on the West Coast or East Coast of Florida about how we saved our favorite shrubs in The Barons when we served on the HOA Board together.  Those shrubs still grow today as a result of Gerry's kind and loving care!

When I saw him in California in the 1960s, and when I saw him again in Sarasota in 2019, he was the same gentle, sweet, easy-going, friendly person. I will remember him fondly. 

Many fond memories of Gerry and all the good folks in Florham Park - he was a great colleague and truly good person.  We will all miss him,  Rocco

Our sweet, kind, amazing father surrounded by his favorite people only a few weeks ago.

Uncle Gerry was there at every stage of life for me, despite how much he moved around the world.  He always felt it important to be with family.  Days out at the beach, Nunley's a ballgame,  my bar mitzvah, a visit to their home in Sarnia, my college graduation, my wedding, my son's bris and schlepping 3 hours across the state of Florida just to have dinner with me.  There wasn't an important  moment in life where he was not there.  I'll miss him terribly.  Rest easy Uncle G.
