

Herbert Altshuler died at age 101 on September 28 in his home in Queensbury, NY. The son of Max and Mamie Altshuler, he was born and grew up in Newark, NJ. His sister Beatrice Mintz and brothers Bernard Altshuler and Eugene Altshuler predeceased him.
After attending Newark’s South Side High School, Herb moved to Florida where he trained as a surveyor and worked for Captain F.M. Hendry at his ranch on Lake Thonotosassa and dredging Florida waterways. He joined the Marines in World War II, rising to the rank of Sergeant and seeing action in Iwo Jima and occupied China. Returning to Newark after his military service he married Harriette Sylvia Klein and began work as a salesman for Climate Control Corporation, spending his career with the firm and becoming Sales Manager and Senior Vice President. He and Harriette moved to Livingston, NJ in 1953, where they raised their sons Bruce, Steven, and Randy. Among other civic roles Herb was the first Scoutmaster to take an integrated Boy Scout troop to the Robert Treat Council’s scout camp, served on the Board of Directors of the Essex County YM-YWHA, and was President of the North Jersey chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
After retiring from Climate Control, Herb and Harriette moved in 1993 from Livingston to their country home in Chatham, NY, where they would live until moving in 2005 to a cottage at The Glen at Hiland Meadows in Queensbury, NY. During their 78 years of marriage, Herb and Harriette enjoyed an active life of international travel, family events highlighted by Herb’s extended toasts, and a deep, loving relationship in which they held hands each night on going to bed. In addition to his wife, Herb is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Bruce Altshuler and Holly Hughes, Steven and Fran Altshuler, and Randy and Mary Grant Altshuler, grandchildren Matthew Altshuler, Aaron Altshuler, Jacob Altshuler, Sam Altshuler, and Tessa Altshuler, great grandchildren Michaela, Brennan, Berkley, Lucky, and Maisy Altshuler, and great great grandchild Harrison Bedard.
The family will be receiving guests for Herbert on Sunday, October 5, 2025 from 10:15 AM to 10:45 AM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, New Jersey 07039, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow at Beth Israel Cemetery, 1098 Woodbridge Center Drive, Woodbridge Township, New Jersey 07095.
