Joyce J. Hoch (nee Jarvis) beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on February 18, 2021. Surviving Joyce is her husband of almost 70 years, Ellis; her children, Lewis, Cynthia (Lee) Brettman, and Leslie (Andrew) Lebow; her grandchildren, Benjamin and Adam Hoch, Ari (Irene) Brettman and Shira (Lonne) Jaffe and Laura and Matthew Lebow; and her great grandchildren, Nathan and Yael Brettman and Eva and Micah Jaffe.
Joyce was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1932, and she grew up in Irvington. She met her husband during a summer vacation in Belmar in 1949. They were married 2 years later. The children arrived in 1952, 1954 and 1957, and Joyce devoted herself to supporting her husband as he grew his accounting practice and to exposing her children to her love of the arts, music and words spoken and written. During this time, Joyce also found time to teach piano, participate in community theatre and develop her talent as a painter.
In the late 1950’s, Joyce and Ellis were among a small group of young Jewish families that founded the East Brunswick Jewish Center, and in 1962, they donated its first Torah. Joyce passed this love and commitment to her children. Joyce was active in the choirs at the West Orange Jewish Center and Morristown Jewish Center where she later became a bat mitzvah.
After the children were underway completing their college educations, Joyce returned to college to finish her undergraduate degree and went on to teach art for several years at Redwood Elementary School in West Orange, NJ. Following retirement, Joyce devoted herself to painting, travel with Ellis and indulging her grandchildren.
