Born in the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in 1937, Phil was a proud graduate of New Rochelle High School (Class of 1955) and Dickinson College (Class of 1959), and he cherished friends from those days throughout his life. As a young man living in New York, he worked on the Lindsay campaign for Mayor, and his work in municipal politics formed the basis for what became 3-1-1. After several difficult years working for his father at Greenhut Fabrics, Phil struck out on his own: at A&L Easy Lift, he sold electric handtrucks from the back of his pickup truck throughout the northeastern US. Later, as President of Eastern Vending in Linden, NJ, he stood up against big corporate interests and gave congressional testimony in defense of smaller companies like his own. In his retirement, Phil was an executive mentor to other business owners. A kind, smart man who helped people, Phil loved a rare steak, a slice of 7-layer cake, and a long nap.
Phil is survived by his wife, Susan; his sister, Marji; his children, Lisa (and Johnny), Andy (and Stacy), and Josh (and Susan); and three wonderful grandchildren, Jonah, Sadie, and Lucas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
A memorial service for Philip will be held Wednesday, May 3, 2023 at 2:30 PM at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, 68 Old Short Hills Road, Livingston, NJ 07039.
