Robin was raised in West Orange, NJ and went to college at Miami University in Ohio, graduating with a degree in Engineering Technology – Manufacturing Engineering. She earned her MBA from the University of Baltimore.
Robin had been part of the Northrop Grumman family in Maryland for over 35 years in various capacities. She began her career as one of the only female manufacturing engineers at her company. She rose through the ranks, becoming a trailblazer for women in her field – holding various upper level positions including Director, Surveillance Systems Product Cells, with the responsibility of leading a team of several hundred employees. Most recently she was promoted to Director, Mission Assurance for Space ISR Division. Robin was a smart lady and an impressive leader, known for her sense of humor and the constant smile on her face. She had a knack for discovering new talent and then proceeding to act as a mentor to foster the careers of her employees, offering professional and often personal advice.
She was very active in various organizations for women in business and leadership, including serving as a sector chair in WINS - Women's Initiative for Networking and Success, which is a Northrop Grumman organization of over 1600 women at 14 companies across the country. In 2010, Robin received a President’s Leadership Award and was recognized by the YWCA of Greater Baltimore for Outstanding Leadership in the Workplace. She was named a TWIN Award winner (Tribute to Women in Industry) by the YWCA of Anne Arundel County in 2012.
Robin believed in giving back and volunteered her time to many organizations including military programs such as Operation Welcome Home, Adopt a Soldier Overseas, and the USO Care Package Project. She particularly took pleasure in helping at the Maryland Food Bank.
In her free time, Robin enjoyed the Annapolis sailing community, where she made many life long friends as a member of a sailboat racing team. Even in her free time, she practiced the skills of teamwork, communication, and leadership while sailing. She liked traveling, especially vacations with her nephew when he was young, and other family members.
Robin is predeceased by her father, Morton Gillman and is survived by her beloved sister, Lori Englander and her husband, Norman, her mother, Zelda Gillman, and her nephew Jeffrey Englander and his wife Hannah Shoemaker. Family was incredibly important to Robin, and she is survived as well by many close aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was loved tremendously by all she knew throughout her life, making friends easily wherever she was. Robin was someone that anyone could depend on to be there in a time of need – and that is exactly what all did for her as she bravely fought her illness. She never stopped giving with an open heart and open arms and will be sorely missed.
Robin’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the caregivers at ComForcare and everyone at The Hospice of the Chesapeake, for their compassionate care over the last few months. It is heartwarming to know that even in her later days, Robin was able to touch the hearts of those around her.
In lieu of sending flowers, donations can be made in Robin’s memory to the United Service Organizations (USO), Friends of the Jewish Chapel at the United States Navel Academy, the Maryland Food Bank, or a charity of your choice.
