Born in Vienna, Austria, she moved with her family to Holland before immigrating to the United States in 1940 to escape war-torn Europe, ultimately settling in Red Bank, NJ.
Selma graduated from Red Bank High School and worked for her family’s boarding home and restaurant until meeting the love of her life, Lew. They married in 1946, raising their two beloved children in Caldwell, NJ while also enjoying their summer home in Lake Hopatcong, NJ.
Selma enjoyed giving back to her community by volunteering and supporting numerous charities throughout her life. Her Jewish heritage was honored through memberships to her synagogue, Hadassah, Sisterhood, and NJCJW, among others. Selma had a deep love for opera, theatre, and the arts. She was an avid reader with a never-ending thirst for learning and was proud to have earned a degree in psychology later in life. Upon Lew’s passing in 1987, Selma continued their love for travel by visiting dozens of countries throughout the world and enjoyed many winters in her home in Miami Beach, FL.
Selma was warm, loving, forgiving, wise, strong, and generous, with a quick wit. She made everyone feel welcomed and accepted for who they were, without judgment. She was a people person beloved by all, an expert listener, and enjoyed a wealth of friends throughout her life.
Her ultimate passion was her family. She leaves behind two devoted children, Belinda Krever, Ted Krever (and his wife Claire), adored sister Shirley Frankel, three loving grand-children, Lauren, Lindsey (and her husband Richard), and David, one cherished great-granddaughter, Madeline Clara, and many nieces, nephews, and their children. She is predeceased by her husband Lew, parents Clara and Abraham Halpern, sister Ruth Engel, and brother Israel Halpern.
