Clara grew up in Detroit, MI on St. Lawrence Street in an all Polish neighborhood. She was the second child out of 5 born to Albin and Wanda Macek. With a large family, a lot of time was spent in the kitchen. Growing up, Clara watched her Mother making all the delicious Polish dishes. Because of her time in the kitchen, Clara loved to make big dinners for her family. For birthdays and holidays, you could always expect the table to be filled with plenty of snacks to enjoy while waiting for dinner. Once dinner was ready, all the platters and bowls would be set on the table, leaving just enough room for the plates! Her family told her that she always made too much, but she wanted everyone to be able to enjoy leftovers! Besides the main course, Clara enjoyed making cakes. Holiday and birthday themes would be picked and off to the store she went to make a memorable cake! There are many pictures to remember all the cakes from over the years that Clara made.
In the summertime, Clara enjoyed planting flowers. Even more, she couldn’t wait to start her vegetable garden. In particular, her tomato plants! Clara loved her tomatoes! And of course, she would grew too many and would share with all.
Always by Clara’s recliner, you would find a book sitting on the table next to her. Clara would enjoy reading a good book and then would tell you all about it. If she wasn’t reading, Clara enjoyed movies and any genre for that matter; from classics, action, to sci-fi, she would watch them all. She could have been a critic!
Clara loved animals; especially dogs with Golden Retrievers being her favorite. But besides having dogs most of her life, Clara did have other pets too! Cats, birds, fish, and even an iguana!
Clara loved to shop – not just for herself, but she always loved to give gifts. Every holiday or birthday, she would buy way too much, but all she wanted was to make everyone happy. She most enjoyed watching the reaction of those opening their presents and to see them smile.
Clara last worked at DMC Children’s Hospital in Detroit, MI for 25 years, until she retired at the age of 70. Clara was the Manager of Development of Gift and Assessments; collecting and processing all the donations to the hospital. Approximately 14,000 donations per year Clara would input in the systems. Clara was very dedicated to her job – working at least 2 Saturdays in addition to her normal 5 day work week. You could always rely on her – dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s – all her work was detailed and organized.
Clara will always be remembered for living a simple life and being very kind-hearted.
Please take this moment to remember all the happy times you have shared with Clara, for this is how she would like us to remember her.
Let us not say good bye, but instead, as Clara’s Father would say, “For Now.” We will miss you Clara and we love you always.
Clara was the dear sister of Christine (the late Thomas) Sokol and Marian (Michael) Stack. Cherished aunt of Lawrence and Lorraine Ackerman and Laura (Fredrick) McGee. Preceded in death by parents Albin and Wanda Macek and sister Patricia (the late Stanley) Bist and brother Joseph Macek.
