James was born to Russell Alger and Macie Belle (Bond) Terhune, April 10, 1930, in Flint, Michigan. He graduated from Flint Northern High School in January 1948. After graduation he entered the United States Air Force in March 1948, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant, and serving for 4 years until his discharge in March, 1952. He married Dolores Rosene Mangus in 1956, and they lived together in Clio, Flint, Birch Run, Livonia, and Plymouth, Michigan. She survives. He leaves as his legacy 4 children: Tim (Cindy), Tom-who preceded him in death (Jaana), Ted (Lynn), and Todd. He also leaves to cherish his memory 6 grandchildren: Sarah (Jason) Lemp, Rebecca (Peter) Owens, Daniel (Julia), Dorothy, Zachary, and Emily; 9 great-grandchildren: Natalie, Judah, Taylor, Adina, Olivia, Selah, Gloriana, Asher and Vontros; and a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Macie Terhune; his sister, Lois Porter; and one son, Thomas.
Immediately after the military Jim entered an apprenticeship with General Motors in 1952 and became a journeyman Modelmaker for AC Spark Plug division of General Motors for 39 years, until he retired in 1991.
But the most important event in James’ life (up until his promotion to glory) occurred on May 8, 1960, when God opened his spiritual eyes to see that he was a sinner in need of a Savior, and that Jesus Christ was the only one who was worthy to be trusted as Savior and followed as Lord. That day began a lifelong pursuit of knowing, loving, and serving Christ; not perfectly, but faithfully. Jim loved God and his Word. He loved his family. He loved his church family, his coworkers, neighbors and friends. And we who knew and loved him are richest of all people. He has left us a tremendous legacy for which we thank God.
