Kim was the beloved wife of her high school sweetheart, Michael Arthur Smith, for nearly 35 years. She was a wonderful mother to Hannah Marie-Smith Bell & Lindsay Marie Curtis, mother-in-law to Michael Curtis & Theresa Bell, caring sister to Kenny & Gary Rehandorf, and cherished “pet-grandma” to a small army of her daughters’ “fur-babies”.
She graduated from Edsel Ford High School in 1985, where she was known as an accomplished athlete in both gymnastics and track/field. She began her collegiate education at Henry Ford Community College, where she earned her Associate's in nursing degree and registered nursing (RN) license in 1988, and earned her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Eastern Michigan University in 2018. After earning her RN license, she began her career in pediatric nursing and volunteered with a crisis pregnancy center in Wayne County—we believe this was what sparked her love for children. She was later called to a life as a full-time mother, and homeschooled both of her daughters from preschool to high school; during this time, alongside teaching their academic foundations, she focused heavily on instilling character development and investing in their faith journeys. Following both daughters’ transition from high school to college, Kim returned to her career in nursing and simultaneously completed her BSN to maximize her future career and support the continued education of her daughters.
In 1998, Kim experienced a spiritual conversion which profoundly transformed her heart and mind and became the foundation of her pursuit of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This event was a pivotal point in her life, deepened her faith, and ignited a desire to serve others, especially children. Despite her many responsibilities with her family, career, and education, Kim was faithful to contribute to both worship and children’s ministries at Dearborn Free Methodist Church, beginning in 2001. While serving the church for nearly 25 years, Kim has been known as a prayer warrior, staff member, keyboard player on the worship team, avid participant in countless mission trips, spearheading both weekly children’s ministry services (currently known as “Character Town”), and facilitating the annual Vacation Bible School program. Her desire was to teach and mentor children within the youth programs, develop leadership skills, and equip them to serve in their own capacities. Kim prioritized fostering relationships both inside and outside of the church and was heavily invested and attentive to the needs of all that she came in contact with. She had a personal interest in nature that included gardening, mountain biking, animal caretaking, hiking, and traveling. Her accomplishments and personal traits are numerous and would never fit within the confines of a simple obituary. Those who were lucky enough to know her or be loved by her were truly blessed, and she will be dearly missed until the return of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
