I was so saddened to just hear of Michael's passing.  We had been close friends for many years. We lived in the same condominium complex together and met at a singles party in the late 1970s.  We became good friends after  that party.  We went to many sporting events together, spent many birthdays and holidays together, many social events, etc.  He and Ivar came to my house for Thanksgiving dinner for many years.  I went with them to the Elks Club for some other holidays.  Sadly, I saw less of him after he retired.  However I did visit him every day in the hospital with Ivar and spent many hours talking and visiting with Ivar in order to support him.  I think the last time I saw Michael was visiting the funeral home for Ivar.  I have missed Michael these last years.  Please rest in peace old friend and enjoy visiting your parents and others.  I will continue to miss you until we meet again.

Mike was a compassionate man who cared about his co-workers and the public he served, even into retirement.  You will be missed, Mike.

It was with great sorrow that I read of Michael's passing in Friday's Free Press (05/08/2015). He was a wonderful childhood friend and the friendship extended into our adult lives. Our friendship revolved around both sports (not surprising to those who knew him) and school. We spend numerous hours playing in all types of weather during our elementary and junior high day, from baseball to hockey to baseball and football. It was great fun. We did a little studying, too. As we entered junior high and high school we often travelled to Olympia to watch our beloved Red Wings. Michael attended my wedding in 1972 and visited my wife and I a few times at our home in Temperance, Michigan. In recent years, our paths crossed at annual gatherings held with graduates of Marsh Elementary (our neighborhood school). I have so many fond memories of Mike as well as his parents, Ivar and Shirley. He never changed, and that led to a great career with the NLRB. My wife, Michaleen and I now live in Petoskey and we are unable to attend the services. Our thoughts are with his family. May his memory be eternal.

Worked with and played softball with Mike for a few years back in the mid-80's.  He was a good mentor and a very bright fellow.  He was also a kind and charitable person though he did not wear that out on his sleeve.  He was also a good son who gave his widowed father lots of time and joy before he passed.  It's way too soon.  With many fond memories, adieu Mike.

Mike's heart may have stopped beating but if more of the world had his heart,
we would all be, in the better place that Mike now rests.
I will miss Mike dearly.

Michael was a friend we met through the friendship of his Dad, Ivar, and my mother, Grace. After my Dad's death, Mom complimented Ivar on the beautiful stained glass Ivar had made & put in the doors of their church. They became very good friends and were friends for many years. When Ivar was concerned about my Mom at any time, he would call me (living several states away) and let me know.Ivar was always working at the church with the Minister and always helping others! Michael came by his generous heart naturally. Even after Ivar's death, Michael continued to visit my mother even in Assisted Living, bringing her gifts and calling to see how she was doing. He had a very kind heart and a generous spirit.  Ivar and my Mom would always joke about the fact that they had Michael & I born in Henry Ford Hospital, at the same time, and my mother and Michael's mother had probably met all those years ago. Mike was very supportive of me both professionally and personally. He believed in the NLRB's mission and the good government could do. He always said jokingly that he wanted to run for office on a platform of raising our taxes to make government work better. He noted that getting elected would be a bit tricky.

He as a nice guy and we had great fun playing golf here and up north. He had season tickets to the Lions, Tigers, and Wings that he was quite generous with. R.I.P. my friend.

Mike was a long time friend.  A good friend.  His life, as many have already said, was focused on helping others and doing so without expectation of recognition or reward.  He had a big heart, the kind of heart you hope your children have.

Mike and I started work at the NLRB  in Detroit on the same day 44 years ago.  We sat in the lobby, waiting to be brought in, looking at each other, not knowing each other.  Later that day we had lunch together and we've been friends ever since.  We learned the job together, we played pranks on one another, we partied with other great friends in Region 7.  The friends I made in the Detroit office were interesting, fun, talented and loyal but Mike was always especially dear because of that first fearful day we shared (along with Frank Molenda, God rest his soul).  

What will I remember most and miss most: Our annual get-togethers over breakfast (with Steve Glasser); our annual phone call on March1 to relive our date of hire; Mike's uncanny memory of things personal in my life that I don't even remember; the twinkle in his eye as he recalled some amusing event out of our past; and just knowing that despite the great geographic separation during most of our lives, we had a life link.

You were a good man and I'll miss you Mike.  Godspeed.

It was such a treat to reconnect with you in the last few years.  I enjoyed having dinner with you and really loved the night Ray and I met, Louise (Ferranti) and Ron Pomanski with you for a whole night of old memories.  BEST NIGHT.  You even brought some old photos to show us.  Rest in peace now.

Mike had a keen intellect,  a deep passion for helping those the NLRA was designed to protect, and a huge heart.  Some of the best files  that were assigned to me  for trial were investigated by Mike. He did things in his own way, but his investigations were extremely well done--very thorough, very well analyzed--and were a pleasure to try. His passion extended to sports, especially Detroit sports, and  even to our office softball teams. He held on to the statistics that he  had meticulously kept for our office softball team for years after we all stopped playing. I remember stopping in his office in Detroit on a visit from Grand Rapids, and he pulled out a yellow legal pad from his desk and told me my on base percentage and batting average from many years before. I had hoped my less than mediorce softball stats had long been forgotten, but Mike brought back a lot of nice memories.       Mike you were a character, and a fine man.

Mike was a very kind-hearted soul. I am so sorry for this loss.  Rest in Peace Mike.

We are the same age and were young when we started at the NLRB. I'll never forget the fun we had and you treating me to lunch in Canada when I turned 40.  You were always nice to me (well most of the time anyway - Ha! Ha!  You would help people when needed and you will be missed.  RIP

Mike was a fine NLRB agent and a truly decent person. He worked hard, played hard, and was most generous and helpful to his friends. Despite his medical problems, and there were many, he fought the tough fight and kept going. I will miss him very much.

Mike was a very bright fellow with a penetrating curiosity who brought very detailed observations gathered over the years into our workplace conversations.  He could also recall sport statistics from distant Detroit teams over beers and brats.  He was a good son, careful to share time and travel with his widowed father during his latter years.  And I know Mike volunteered of his own time to a few causes in the community around him. I am glad to have met and worked with this big hearted fellow and saddened to learn of his early passage into the great unknown.
