Mike grew up in Italy and proudly served in the Italian Navy before immigrating to the United States in January 1967 in pursuit of a better life for his family. He first arrived in New York and continued his journey by train to Detroit, where he built a fulfilling life. A dedicated and hardworking man, Mike worked as a welder at Great Lakes Steel for many years.
On June 20, 1964, he married his late wife, Olimpia DeToma, with whom he shared many wonderful years until her passing in 2021. He was deeply proud of his Italian heritage, embracing its traditions, especially the food and frequently traveling back to visit his homeland. He was an active member of the Italian American Club and a passionate supporter of Italy’s national soccer team, never missing a match and cheering them on. Sundays were centered around mass and soccer – watching the Italian League, Serie A. And enjoying matches of some of his favorite teams - Juventus, Napoli, Fiorentina, Inter, to name a few...
Mike had a zest for life and valued both his physical and social well-being. He exercised daily, enjoying long walks and cycling. He treasured his time spent with his coffee groups and loved lunch outings at Cantoro’s. A history buff at heart, he immersed himself in historical events, politics, and economic discussions. Mike was also a social butterfly, always engaging with loved ones through daily texts and staying connected on Facebook, where he shared his warmth with friends and family near and far.
To cherish his memory, Mike leaves behind his two daughters, Enza (Tom) Sleva and Angelica DeToma (Eduardo Almaguer), as well as his beloved grandchildren, Carmela Sleva, Stephen Sleva, and Sophia Almaguer. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Carlo and his twin, Nicola DeToma.
His deep Catholic faith was a guiding force throughout his life. In honor of his memory, contributions may be made to St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Catholic Church.
Mike will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of love, laughter, and devotion will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
