Ray Clark Roberts Jr., age 82, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021 at St. Mary's Hospital in Livonia. He was born March 6, 1939 in Ennis, Texas, son of Dr. Ray C. Roberts Sr. and Lillie Mae Roberts.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth Wayne.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia, sister-in-law Dolores Grodzicki and nephew Joseph Morone, as well as several cousins and numerous friends and his beloved cats, Becca and Bella.

Ray was an avid scuba diver, and held many certifications in the sport, including Master Diver and instructor. He was also certified to teach scuba diving to the handicapped. He especially loved shipwreck diving, having spent much time diving shipwrecks in the Great Lakes as a member of the Ford Seahorses Dive Club. His favorite dive site of all was Truk Lagoon in Micronesia which he visited on multiple occasions.

Ray retired in 1999 from Ford Motor Company after almost 26 years in a career in Information Technology.

Ray had served in the Army Reserves, and for the last 21 years was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving in various capacities including District Captain of the 9th Central Region.

He had been licensed as an Advanced EMT, acting in that capacity on a volunteer basis. He also enjoyed practicing and teaching Tai Chi as a member of the Michigan Tai Chi Association. Ray and Virginia enjoyed traveling and were able to take numerous cruise vacations. He was also a proud member of the Masons.

Ray, you were one of my best friends in the Auxiliary and a treasured confidante. Your advice was invaluable to me! Thanks for entering those last certificates for me, and I guess I still owe you that beer.

I only know Ray as a fellow USCG Auxiliarist. He was a dedicated, caring and committed Auxiliarist. Ray always wore several hats as we often did not have enough volunteers to fill all the offices in our Flotilla. Ray set the example! He was a mentor to everyone and was always willing to help anyone who needed assistance. An active recruiter, teacher and counselor. I am honored to have served with him and hope to one day rise to his level of service.

I met Ray 9 years ago in the USCG Aux.. I was intriged at how devoted he was to the Coast Guard. One thing for sure about Ray was he made you do the homework and not just give you the answers. His bible was the Aux Manual and he believed that it was the very core of the Auxiliay. He was adamant about its use to find out information. I knew he loved animals like me and we had a bond together within that disclosure. I am very saddened at the loss of him. I will miss his sometimes scrappy ways that were just part of his character. Semper Paratus my Shipmate. God Bless you on your Journey home.. I am so sad to lose you as a fellow Coast Guardsman.
