Robert L. Liening, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, and World War II veteran, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2024, at the age of 100, surrounded by loved ones. Born on November 20, 1923, in Detroit, Michigan, to Henry and Frances (Kaiser) Liening, Robert lived a life defined by service, family, faith, and friendship.
At a young age, Robert enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. As a B-17 pilot stationed in Italy, he bravely served his nation and was proud to be part of the Greatest Generation.
Robert's love for his family was paramount throughout his life, and is part of the legacy he leaves behind. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, ensuring that family gatherings were frequent and filled with joy. His role as a caregiver to his wife, Mary, during her battle with cancer was a testament to his unwavering devotion and selflessness. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he treasured the time he spent with them.
Robert was an active and dedicated member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Taylor, Michigan. He served his parish faithfully as both an usher and a member of the choir. His commitment to his faith was a guiding force in his life, providing him with strength and purpose.
Beyond his family and faith, Robert was a man who valued community and friendship. He was a cherished member of his regular coffee group, where he enjoyed lively discussions and developed deep, lasting friendships.
A charitable and giving man, Robert consistently put the needs of others before his own, embodying the spirit of service in every aspect of his life. While he loved to perform the song “Oh Lord, It’s Hard to Be Humble,” he lived simply and enjoyed quality time far more than any material possessions.
Robert leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity. He is survived by his five children: Ann (Rick) Gignac, Pat (Dan) Terry, Teresa (Ron) Krukowski, Michael (Kathy) Liening, and Jerry (Nan) Liening. He was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
