It is with great sadness that the family of Ilse Bierbaum announces her passing at the age of 85 on Monday May 25th, 2020. She passed peacefully, her family by her side one day short of her 86th birthday. Ilse was born Ilse Jonkhans in her hometown of Emmerich in Germany. She immigrated to Canada in 1952 to be with the love of her life Ewald Bierbaum. They married days after her arrival and enjoyed a long 65 year marriage until Ewald's passing in 2017.

Ilse was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to laugh and loved to smile. She was a sweet and kind person who enriched the lives of everyone she met. She loved to cook, tell stories and support the emotional needs of her friends and family. She survived the ravages of war torn Europe as the 3rd child of 4, raised by her mother a widowed pensioner. For many years she volunteered at the St. Joseph's Hospital neonatal department. She was an avid golfer and spent much of her later life wintering in Florida.

Ilse will be sadly missed by her children Bernie (Sue), Carol (Loren) and Greg; her grandchildren Christel (Paul), Colin (Elizabeth), Natalie (Matt), Jaclyn (Mike), Michael (Christina), Robert and Steven (Dayna) and her great-grandchildren Siena, Avery, Jack, Ella, Michelle, William and Beau. Ilse was a beloved sister to Heinz and Christel and her predeceased brother Robert.

A church service, interment and celebration of life will be held at a future date when it is once again safe for people to gather and share in each others physical presence. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be given to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Please feel free to browse the Needham Funeral Service website for photos and a video in celebration of her life.

Dear Bernie, Carol, Greg & family,

The Nerger family are all very sad to hear about your Mom’s passing. Your father and our Dad both came from Paderborn, and when Heinz arrived in Canada at the Toronto airport, Ewald was there to meet him. The community of post-World-War 2 Germans in London, Ontario was tightly knit. Our families were entwined in many ways, not just through ESAM and Old Oak, although both were an important part of our lives. We spent many Sundays walking construction sites and looking at buildings go up throughout the city.

For the kids, your mother was “Tante Ilse”, and we have many happy memories of playing together and spending time at your home on Southdale Road, from go-kart racing on the front lawn to feeding the pony. Our parents had fun at the many pool parties on Saturday nights, with lots of great music and dancing. Later on there were the Kafe Klatches, and get togethers in Florida. The day after Christmas we would sometimes drive from Aventura to Nokomis to visit your family. That gave us a chance to catch up with your mother about ‘the kids’ and their families. She liked to share photos, and of course there was always food and drinks and coffee and cake. Back in London, your parents were always thoughtful to visit ours on Sunday mornings at their place on Proudfoot Lane.

We send our deepest condolences on behalf of all of our family and hope to see everyone at your mother’s celebration of life.

Heinz, Dorle, Monika, Hans, Joanie & family

My deepest sympathies to each of you, as we all say farewell to this beautiful woman. What an overwhelmingly sad moment, to hear that Ilse had passed. Though it has only been three years since meeting her , I have been so privileged to have shared many wonderful hours of enriching conversation with her. We enjoyed a lovely friendship in such a short time. I will always admire her strength of character, the kind, nurturing and compassionate way that she dealt with me, and the adaptive approach she took to her day...I will carry with me the bounds of “life wisdom “ that she so generously imparted...I will miss my friend. Thankyou for sharing Ilse with me.

Donna and I would like to extend our sincere wishes of sympathy to the Bierbaum family. We have many fond memories of Ilse and Ewald, our neighbours for many decades.

Ilse lived a wonderful life and was always so proud of her family. We often shared a chuckle at the ongoing love affair between our canine pets, Reilley and Chanel.

Rest in piece old friend!
