Alex Rios, was born August 7, 1946, at Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Eight girls were delivered there that day, he was the only boy. He liked to say that from that day forward, he was always surrounded by women!
Alex was extremely hard working, as you all know, even as a young boy. To help his mother Lupe, he started working at the young age of 7, shining shoes at Olvera Street and at The Farmers Market. He also sold The LA Times newspaper and worked at his neighborhood corner market on East 24th Street. He always took good care of his Nana and his mom. Even as a kid, he was always the man of the house. Alex didn’t let all his hard work stop him from going to school, he graduated Roosevelt High School in 1964, and went on to LA Trade Tech.
On August 14, 1970, he met the love of his life, Bernice. They were inseparable from that day forward. In true romantic fashion, 46 years later to the day, August 14, 2016, Alex took his last breath with his wife by his side. Our hearts will forever be broken without him. He was devoted to his wife and family. He loved and lived so selflessly and cared about everyone before himself.
Alex and Bernice shared a love that only fairytales are made of.
Alex and Bernice have three children, Raen, Alex Jr. and Toni. He has four grandchildren Julisa, Alexandra, Lileigh, and Marcelo- they were the joy of his life. He is also survived by his pride and joy, his babe, Dutchess, his puppy.
He was an active member of the ILWU Local 63, after transferring from Local 13. He loved working with his friends at APL and at 400. He enjoyed taking care of his work buddies, regularly bringing everyone food and coffee. He even used to feed the cats and coyote at APL, even on his nights off!
He was passionate about everything and everyone he loved. Music, food, animals, jokes, cars, real estate, not to mention his family, godchildren and countless friends. Alex was always someone that everyone turned to when they were in need. He took care of everyone he cared about. He was someone everyone relied on for advice. He was a true man of his word.
He will be missed beyond measure...
