Sadie was born on November 7, 1916 in the small town of Walsenburg, Colorado to Mathew Martinez of Costilla, New Mexico and Helen Hayes Martinez of Redwing, Colorado. Sadie had 8 siblings and was a loving and caring sister to all of them. She also loved animals of all kinds. Her mother would occasionally look out the window of their house to see Sadie walking home from school accompanied by a stray dog she had seen on the road. This trait continued into adulthood when she would bring neighbors’ dogs into her house if she felt they were not being taken care of properly. She did not keep them but always made sure they were sheltered from bad weather and fed. The family moved to East Los Angeles when she was a youngster. She attended high school at Roosevelt High School, graduated and then continued her education and became a cosmetologist. She was very creative and used that attribute as a hair stylist. She worked in her career for more than 50 years. While attending Roosevelt she met Joseph Uranga (Pepe). Pep pursued her for years but she was hard to get. A very independent woman. They married in 1943 when he was drafted for World War 2. While he was gone, she continued with her career. Eventually, the family moved to Burbank, California in the San Fernando Valley. By then, they had two daughters: Charlotte and Randie. Sadie was very active with her parish at St. Finbar’s in Burbank and also their elementary school. She coached the girls’ basketball team very successfully, belonged to the Altar Society, was a Girl Scout leader, belonged to a ladies cutthroat canasta group. All the while, she was working as a cosmetologist, at times owning her own shops or working for other shop owners. When Pep retired from Lockheed Aircraft Company, he and Sadie moved to Taos, New Mexico. Both Charlotte and Randie and their families had moved there during the early 1970’s. Pep and Sadie opened Pepe’s Deli and Sadie became famous for her cooking; chile, pastrami sandwiches, burritos, and amazing carrot cakes and cheesecakes. No matter what she decided to do, she did it to the very best of her abilities. She was the best Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother anyone could ask for. She was always there when you needed her, not only for her family but for anyone who needed help, a kind word, a non-judgmental ear, a loving hug or a sweet smile. She was a classy, gorgeous “dame” as Pep would say. Sadie moved to heaven on January 28, 2016. She will be missed but be assured she is keeping her eye on all of us and will continue those prayers that got us all through difficult times. Sadie is survived by her daughters Charlotte Hopper of Long Beach, California, Randie Gonzales (John) of Taos, New Mexico, granddaughters Rebecca Hopper of Los Angeles, California, Alicia Fields Skinner (Brian) of Phoenix, Arizona and great granddaughter Trinity Lee Hopper-Moran of Los Angeles, California, her brother Victor Martinez (Alice) and sister Helen Luhan, as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years Joseph, her granddaughter Tiffany Lee Hopper and several brothers and sisters. Services will be held at All Souls Cemetery Chapel at 4400 Cherry Avenue, Long Beach, California 90807, 562-424-8601. Public visitation on February 11, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Mass and burial on February 12, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the location.
