A resident of Lakewood for 51 years, Dorothy passed from this life peacefully Sunday morning March 25, 2012. She is survived by her three children, Carol Moyer-Arnold, Oklahoma City, OK; Gary Bleedorn, Suquamish, WA ; and Mark Bleedorn, wife Susan, Cottonwood, CA. She was blessed with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who loved her dearly!
Dorothy Patricia Abel was born in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, on November 2, 1927 to William and Marietta (Duax) Abel . Being the first child of eight, she is survived by one brother, Bob Abel, St Paul MN, and five sisters, Rosemary Kuckler, St Paul, MN; Shirley Etl, Vadnis Hts, MN; Ruthann Lyons, St Paul, MN; Virginia Clemons, St Paul MN and Mia Probst, Rosedale, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Bill Abel of Santa Rosa, CA
Dorothy married Eugene O Bleedorn in May 1950 in St Paul, MN . They moved to southern California in 1959. Dorothy was a stay at home mother for many years when her children were small. She loved to garden , sew and bake homemade bread and cinnamon rolls for her for her family. As the children got older and were in school, she pursued her passion of working in the medical field. She became certified medical assistant and was always interested in health and living a healthy life. She worked for private practice family doctors in the area for 30 years. She took great pride in her work and continued her studies to keep current with her certifications in radiology and lab technology. Later she taught medical assisting at the Bryman College in Long Beach before retiring in 1992. In retirement she had several home based businesses, selling Nature Sunshine Herbal Products, as well as Cameo and Amway Products.
Dorothy was one of the original Lakewood Community Garden members having worked her garden plot for over 30 years. She served as Garden Club president and was instrumental in organizing the monthly meetings and arranging for various speakers to come speak on pertinent gardening topics. She was a Girl Scout Leader, involved in Boy Scouts, Neighborhood Watch block captain for her street and above all she was a proud American! She flew her flag every Sunday and National Holiday being diligent to take it down at sunset! She was product of the Greatest Generation, with a Depression Era mentality which did not waste anything!
She was a member of, Our Lady Help of Christians Chapel (traditional Catholic) in Garden Grove, CA. She loved her church and was at every possible service and activity. She was a devote Catholic all her life.
Dorothy touched the lives who all who knew her. Her passing leaves a big a hole in the hearts of her family, but she gave us a great example of how to live life to the fullest.
Friends and family are invited to attend a viewing on Friday March 30th which will be from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Luyben Dilday-Mottell Family Mortuary located at 5161 Arbor Road in Long Beach. A memorial mass will be held at Our Lady Hope of Christians Chapel located at 9621 Bixby Garden Grove, CA on Saturday March 31, 2012 at 1:00. The intermittent is to follow immediately at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress.
