Dorothy Loretta Lind passed away from cancer in Long Beach on August 23, 2011, three weeks after celebrating her 88th birthday with family. Born in San Francisco, Dorothy met the love of her life, Irvine "Tom" Lind, while working at a candy shop on the cliffs of Ocean Beach. They married in 1942 and in 1947 moved to Tom's hometown of Long Beach where Tom worked as a lifeguard and then as a police officer, retiring in 1972. They enjoyed 49 years of marriage until Tom's passing in 1991. They lovingly raised four daughters in Belmont Heights: Loretta (Dennis) Madsen; Linda Hagman (deceased); Joan (John) Van Blom; and Carol (Keith) Hansen. Dorothy was active in Mann, Jefferson, and Wilson PTA's for over 25 years. Her life centered on family. Until diagnosed in February, Dorothy lived independently in her home of 64 years, gardening, driving her car, decorating for holidays, hosting family gatherings, and traveling. Dorothy is survived by three daughters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dorothy will be interred at San Francisco National Cemetery at the Presidio. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Yosemite Conservancy or MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute. Please sign the guest book atwww.presstelegram.com/obituaries.
