Gerald Hugh Smith

Gerald Hugh Smith, born April 30, 1934 in Flint, Michigan passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, in Los Alamitos, CA, the son of James and Mary Bernadette Smith. Jerry graduated from St Anthony’s High School in Long Beach. In 1956 he served in the US Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia as a training instructor, and in 1958 he transferred to the US Army Corp Reserve, Presidio of San Francisco. While in the military, Jerry attended the College of William and Mary. Jerry earned a bachelor's degree in Earth Physics and Exploration Geophysics from UCLA (1963). He also earned bachelors and master's degrees in Business Administration and Accounting plus a teaching credential in math and science from CSU, Long Beach. Jerry worked for Shell Oil Company, where he and wife, Marilyn, met in 1966. In 1969 he began teaching at Fountain Valley High School retiring after over 20 years. Jerry is a current member of the BPOE Elks, Newport Harbor, CA No 1767 and a 25 year member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Surviving family is his wife Marilyn of 46 years, children Barbara (Bill) Dodge, Michele, Catherine (Larry) Givertz and Michael (Lauren). Four grandchildren who were the light and sparkle in his eyes, Peter, Griffin, Lylah and Ian. Surviving siblings: Thomas (Marge), Patrick (Marcia), Michael (Margaret) and Mary Kathleen (Gerald) Brock. Proceeded in death by his brother Richard Eldyn Smith (2008). A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 23rd at St. Matthews Church, 672 Temple Ave, Long Beach, CA with internment at All Souls Cemetery 4400 Cherry Ave, Long Beach CA.
