Larry D. Lyons

Larry D. Lyons, 68, of Long Beach, CA, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center after a long, courageous battle with chronic necrotizing pancreatitis.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harry M. Lyons and Lola M. Lyons.

Larry owned his own gardening business in Long Beach for over 30 years and had many faithful customers he enjoyed getting to know throughout the years.

Larry was a lifelong Democrat, an avid reader, and movie-lover. An incredibly intelligent man who was always thinking, he loved writing poetry and writing letters to the editor in the local paper. He was a huge fan of Sigmund Freud and loved analyzing dreams and “Freudian slips”. He wrote 2 books: In Defiance of English (poetry); and another called, Freudian Dream Interpretation for Poets. He adored folk music, Irish dancing, and his one and only grandchild. Towards the end of his life, he retired to Lake Hemet with his wife, where his favorite pastimes included feeding special dog biscuits to the raccoons, collecting firewood and recyclables around the campground, as well as boating around the lake.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife of more than 41 years, Maria; his daughters, Jennifer and Meredith of Long Beach, CA; his son, Michael of Lake Perris, CA; his grandson, Liam; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the nurses, doctors, therapists, aides and other staff at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center who worked tirelessly to provide the best care possible during Larry’s four-month hospitalization.

A memorial service will be held honoring Larry on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2 pm at Unitarian Universalist Church of Long Beach, 5450 E. Atherton St, Long Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Larry’s name to Memorial Medical Care Foundation (MMCF), P.O. Box 1428, Long Beach, CA 90801. The fund the family has chosen is for the “Area of Greatest Need” (simply write AGN on the memo line).
