I just heard the news of your mother, Betty.  

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.  She was always very nice to me when I saw her with Maxine.

Grandma was such a special woman to me. She was so lively, full of life, spunky, had a wicked (quick wit) sense of humor, hilariously funny, and was always herself. Grandma had the tendency to leave you a thousand memories of her in just the short period of time that you would spend with her. Grandma wore a special perfume that every time I smell it now, I automatically associate it with her. Getting to know grandma over my lifetime was like walking into a charming old city, busy with adventure and finding out that it was deeply rooted with muddled history â€“ yet strongly survived. I appreciate so many things about Grandma; and I would like to name a few. Grandma did not stay angry for long, at least it didn't seem so with her grandchildren. Grandma would cuss you out one second (all in love and of course for something we did to annoy her) and be cooking you beans and a tortilla the next second later. I appreciated her big smile when she would say or hear something hilariously funny, and it was hard to offend grandma because she even laughed at jokes made about herself, that's just how she was. I appreciate Grandma's strength as a woman who grew up in a struggling Latino community, who faced opposition in her time for not only be a single mother, and for being Latina, but also for just being a strong woman â€“ but knowing Grandma, she didn't ever seem to cry about that, she was a get up and keep going, keep surviving kind of woman. I'm sure Grandma was strong for many reasons, having five brothers could be one of them. I appreciate Grandma's desire to make yearly visits to us during our adolescents â€¦ as a young child you tend to be a sponge, and I sponged up every memory I could of her when she came. Every year she would come and every year it seemed like she got funnier and even a bit more generous with her affection. In all honesty, it used to bother me that whenever I would say â€œlove you grandmaâ€ â€¦ she would reply â€œokay, mijaâ€ while simultaneously puckering up her lips and shifting her head forward for a kiss on the cheek. Now in retrospect, I realize that grandma didn't have to say those words for me to understand that she meant them because her actions and loyalty to her family, friends and even kindness to total strangers said it all. (Grandma could start up a conversation with anyone and be best friends with them in a matter of minutes.) I used to watch her reactions when we would take her to church and someone would walk by to introduce themselves to Grandma. She would humbly extend her hand and of course say something good about God or El, Paso if asked. 
Don't get it twisted though, Grandma was as tough as they come, cursing like a sailor at times, but that was something we all ended up loving about her! 

Grandma Betty, Grandma B, Granny Dear, Granny, Gram mama, Gramma, and of course the Mexican Lucille Ball; I will always love you and cherish my memories of you. Thank you for always being you!

Grandma Betty meant so much to me, I lived with her my whole life and the bond we had I will forever cherish and miss her until the Lord calls me. Rest in Peace beautiful I Love you some much ~Lexie
