Mrs. Glenda White, 88, of Longview, Texas, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024. Glenda was born on August 6, 1935, in Lyford, Texas, to Hubert and Pauline Dalton. Glenda spent her childhood years in Texas, Oregon, and California, following her father’s occupation of farming. She graduated from high school in Harlingen, Texas. She also attended business college in Tacoma, Washington. She spent most of her life as a mother and homemaker but did hold several jobs throughout her lifetime, including key punch operator and leasing manager.
Glenda was an avid reader and also enjoyed crossword puzzles and cross stitch. Although she appreciated the natural beauty of the world, when asked to describe a perfect summer day she wrote, “Inside an air-conditioned house when you don’t have to stick a toe out the door for ANYTHING!!!” She had an interest in history and politics and knew a lot of trivia. She loved to play along at home with Jeopardy and probably could have beaten many of the contestants on the show. She considered herself a competent home cook (“as long you don’t want cordon bleu” as she used to say) but her family recalls with great fondness many of her recipes—including homemade picante sauce, strawberry jam, chicken fried steak, and purple hull peas with cheese sauce—which they now serve to their own families.
Glenda found comfort throughout her life in her deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ after being saved at age 12. She considered her Bible to be her most treasured possession. She was active in Baptist churches throughout her life and served in many capacities. She especially felt called to be a Sunday school teacher and served in that role in many churches, for many age groups, over the years. Children loved her and would always request to sit next to her in the main church service. Glenda made it her mission to love everyone she came into contact with, regardless of who or what they might be, and considered this to be her spiritual gift from God.
Glenda wrote that she hoped her spiritual legacy would be, “To be faithful in Bible study, prayer, and church attendance because these are the things that will help them to be strong in the faith in times of stress, distress, and trouble.” In the last several years of her life, Glenda found particular comfort in Isaiah 26:3, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
Glenda was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett “Buddy” White; her parents; her brother, Douglas Dalton; and her children Wayne Daniel, Susie Driggers, Jesse Daniel, and Brenda Daniel. She leaves behind her daughter, Debbie Daniel; grandchildren Jennifer Woods, Wendy Doster, Kelly Daniel, Bo Driggers, Lora Yother, Lacy Johnson, Kyle Daniel, and Philip Daniel; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many members of her extended family; and her friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A time of visitation with her family for Glenda will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Lakeview Funeral Home, 5000 W. Harrison Road, Longview, TX 75604, followed by a celebration of her life at 11:00 AM.
