

Joe Harold Thompson was born on November 15, 1940, in Marshall, Texas to William H. and Corine Thompson. He was reared in the Catholic faith and received his grade school education at Holy Spirit in Marshall, Texas and Holy Rosary High School in Lafeyette, Louisiana. Following graduation from Holy Rosary, Joe returned home where he attended and received a bachelor's degree from Wiley College. He received a master's degree from Stephen F. Austin/TCU.
At Wiley College, Joe met his beloved wife, Helen "Polly". To their union, two children were born, Daphne and Joe Harold, II. Joe was a devoted husband to Polly throughout their 54 years of marriage and cared for her exceptionally well from the onset of her illness until her death. He was a devoted, responsible and loving father. Family was his priority. To his grandchildren, he was "Pop", alongside his wife, "Lolly" (as they affectionately called Polly).
Joe Thompson fervently enjoyed the educational process. Over the course of his career, he was a coach and a teacher at Maggie B. Hudson Junior High School, and an administrator at Foster Middle School and Forrest Park Middle School. For more than 30 years, he taught and coached many young people in football, track and basketball. As an administrator and behavioral management strategist, he believed discipline and focus are essential to student success in school and in life. He also worked at Schlitz Brewery, where he had many, many friends.
During his leisure time, Joe enjoyed traveling with his family. He traveled throughout the United States and to Germany and other parts of Europe.
Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William H. "Sonny" Thompson, Jr. and his loving wife, Helen "Polly" Thompson. He is survived by his daughter, Daphne Thompson, his son, Joe H. Thompson II, his grandchildren, Jacelyn Thompson-Daigle, Chelsea Glover, Joe H Thompson, III and Haley Thompson; and, two great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
