I'm a survivor. Lost my eyesight at age 40, kidneys failed at age 41, spent 2 years on dialysis, had kidney transplant, received some excellent rehab and training in getting around with a white cane, decided to get a dog guide and went to the Seeing Eye, where I met the most extraordinary person, who later became my wife. Moved to LA, where we still live. Then I was handed another opportunity at survivorship. Went in the hospital in February 2010 with what I thought was the flu, ended up being ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome). Stayed in the hospital until end of April, most of that time in the ICU. Finally woke up, but was pretty much unable to use my legs and went into a rehab program. When I finally got to come home in the middle of July, I was still unable to walk, and doctors and physical therapists were telling Donna that I would never walk again. I'm working real hard to prove them wrong. I am walking with the use of a walker and cane, but am still looking forward to being able to work with my dog guide, Gatsby. I never would have made it at all without the dedication of my wife, Donna. She's certainly more than I deserve.
Charlie passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013 and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arrangements under the direction of Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary, Los Angeles, CA.
