He was born February 19, 1949 in Whitehall, Montana to Philip and Katherine (Hotrum) Duncan. When Dave was four years of age his family moved to Dillon, Montana in order for his father to assume the position of Montana Fifth District Judge. Dave attended the local schools graduating from Beaverhead County High School in 1967. In 1971 he graduated from the University of Montana in Missoula with a Bachelor’s degree in political science.
Following graduation Dave lived and worked in San Francisco for several years before relocating to Seattle, Washington. With a keen ability to always seek out the positive side of life, Dave had a natural inclination toward sales. He demonstrated this talent with successful sales records for both the Olivetti and 3M Companies. Always willing to seek out and develop a new opportunity, Dave also had several successful years in the business of real estate.
Gathering his collective talent and knowledge of sales Dave purchased a wholesale gift business at the Seattle Gift Center. He renamed the manufacturer’s representative business to Duncan Company and quickly expanded his product line to include yard and garden products in addition to high end French linens. He later represented Yves DeLorme (Palais Royal) as he expanded his showroom. The sales associates from the showroom covered the Pacific Northwest territory of Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. After twenty-five successful years at the Seattle Gift Center Dave made the decision to sell his business and retire.
He relocated to West Hollywood, California in 2004 and immediately became active in the gardening activities of his condominium association, being recognized with a plaque in his honor located just beneath the deck of his home which is also the site of his 2008 marriage to Lee Hurley in a double ceremony with life long friends James Cloud and Wes Andersen. Not being one to let the battle with cancer to slow him down, Dave continued to make the most of every moment pursuing the adventures of travels to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, and South America.
Dave’s bright and positive outlook on life served as an inspiration to those who were caught in the arc of the bright light of his being. He will be especially missed by his family members who survive him in death; Lee Hurley his spouse and life partner of 30 years, brother Monty (Kay) Duncan, Butte, MT, sister Irene (Tom) Erdie, Helena, MT, sister Jane Duncan, Missoula, MT, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private burial to take place at the family site in Pony, Montana.
Per Dave’s wishes donations in his memory may be made to The City of Hope Cancer Research Foundation, Duarte, California.
