With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Bernardo R. Lozano, a beloved brother, mentor, coach, and friend. He passed away on February 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, dedication, and kindness that will be cherished forever.
Born on December 30, 1947, to Bernardo V. Lozano and Guadalupe R. Lozano, Bernardo lived a life of purpose and commitment. He proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, where he earned two Silver Stars and a Bronze Star for his bravery and honorable service. His dedication to helping others continued long after his military career as he pursued a lifelong passion for education, athletics, and mentorship.
Bernardo earned his degrees from Pepperdine University and dedicated his life to teaching, coaching, and community service. He worked as a teacher, counselor, and athletic coach at various institutions, including Ernest Righetti High School, Santa Maria Joint Unified School District, and Los Angeles Unified School District. His impact extended beyond the classroom through his work with the Special Olympics, where he served as a head coach and official, helping athletes of all abilities achieve their dreams.
His love for sports and mentorship also led him to officiate for organizations such as the California Interscholastic Federation and the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation. In addition, he worked with the California Department of Corrections, where he played a vital role in supervising recreational programs, ensuring that inmates had access to physical education and personal growth opportunities.
Bernardo was known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to those he mentored. His influence will live on in the lives of the countless students, athletes, and friends he inspired.
He is survived by his loving siblings: Alan R. Lozano (brother), Debra L. Rodriguez (sister), Craig R. Lozano (brother), and Claudia Lozano Martinez (sister). He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernardo V. Lozano and Guadalupe R. Lozano, as well as his beloved brothers and sister, Donald Lozano, Gray Lozano, and Gloria Gonzalez.
Bernardo’s passion, wisdom, and kindness will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
