It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Segundina Pagatpatan Ocol, on September 16, 2024, in Los Osos, California, at the age of 94. She was born on December 10, 1929 in Gahoy, Samar, Philippines, the daughter of Angel and Isidora Pagatpatan.
Affectionately known as “Gunding” to family and friends, Segundina spent her twenties and early thirties working in Manila. On the recommendation of her sister, who was residing in the United States, she began corresponding with her future husband, Raymundo Ocol, and they married in 1962. Although the loss of their firstborn son Rey just days after his birth brought her sorrow, Segundina's resilience shone through.
Eventually, she joined her husband in the United States, settling in Los Osos, California, where they farmed the land he had purchased. Together, they worked long hours on the farm and started a family, instilling in their children the values of hard work and perseverance.
After Raymundo’s untimely passing in 1976, Segundina faced the daunting task of raising their three young children on her own. With the support of nearby family, friends, and caring neighbors, she navigated this new chapter with bravery, strength, and determination. Though the work was exhausting, she continued farming alongside family and friends as the camaraderie and sense of purpose it provided were invaluable to her.
In her early 70s, Segundina embraced retirement. The transition proved challenging however, following the heartbreaking loss of her second son, Raymond Jr. Through her enduring faith, prayer, and the support of those around her, she found solace and slowly moved forward. The family farm became her sanctuary and place of healing, where she nurtured her favorite plants with the same care and devotion she gave to her family.
Segundina’s greatest joys came from supporting her children as they pursued their futures, cherishing precious moments with her grandchildren, gardening on the family farm, and sharing fond memories and stories of and with family and friends. She will be remembered for her love and devotion, faith, resilience, and strength-of-character.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolina and husband Jeff Heinen; youngest son, Bernardin; grandson, Colin; granddaughter, Lauren; siblings, Sofia Beltran, Vicente Pagatpatan Sr. and Macaria Loyola in the Philippines; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and relatives.
Segundina was preceded in death by her parents, Angel and Isidora Pagatpatan; husband, Raymundo Ocol; firstborn son, Rey P. Ocol; second son, Raymond P. Ocol Jr.; and several brothers and sisters.
We extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the compassionate staff of Bay Osos Residential Care for the Elderly for providing Segundina with a caring and nurturing home away from home. Special thanks also to the staff at Central Coast Home Health & Hospice for their kindness and support during her final months.
Visitation will take place from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Friday, October 18, 2024 at Los Osos Valley Mortuary followed by a rosary at 6:00 p.m.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 19, 2024 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Los Osos. The Mass will be immediately followed by interment at Los Osos Valley Memorial Park.
