She was born on June 20th, 1928 at the Falls of Rough in Grayson County KY to the late, Golda and Lennie Allen. Her husband, James "Carrol" Spaulding and sister, Dorothy Probus also preceded her in passing.
Bernice came to Louisville when she was only 15 years old in 1943, as relatives often did at that time she ‘boarded” with a friend from the Falls. She always said that she had to lie about her age in order to get her first job at White Castle at 1st and Market St., she quickly fell in love with the nice clothing, the jewelry, the perfume and the shoes that she could buy. Most of all she enjoyed the freedom of being on her own.
Somehow my dad won her heart and they were married when they were both 17 years old. She had known him from The Falls of Rough and he also had moved up to Louisville to find work. They soon settled down in an apartment at 24th and Jefferson St. in Louisville, she would then get a job at the A&P grocery at 28th and Dumesnil St. in Louisville. Their first son was born in 1949, the second son in 1953, and a daughter in 1958. She stayed at that store until 1969 and then moved to the new and bigger store at the “Big A” shopping center on Cane Run Rd and Bells Ln. She stayed there until A&P went out of business in the early 80’s. Retirement didn’t fit her personality so she learned to drive a car at the age of 55, and set out to find jobs at many businesses in Louisville, with stints at The Golden Corral on Dixie Hwy, the Woolworth’s in Southland Terrace, the City of Louisville Police Dept., the Courier Journal Newspaper, UofL and finally the Greater Louisville Medical Society. She worked until she was 80 years old, and loved every minute of serving the public.
She was also known as someone that made sure you were fed if you came to her house. When you came to Bernice's house you were always expected to eat a meal. She was considered by all as a great “country” cook and was teased that she always put a stick of butter and a cup of sugar in all of her dishes. She was married twice, had 3 children, lots of grandchildren and also many great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her three children, son Danny (Susan), Mike (Debbie) and Rita (Len), she is also survived by her sister Katherine Edwards of the Falls of Rough.
She had a long and happy life, filled with ups and downs but always was an extremely hard worker, fun loving and always provided a loving and comfortable home for her children and her many visitors.
