Charles E. Unterreiner, 92, returned home to his heavenly Father on May 23, 2018. Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Charley was an alumnus of DuPont Manual High School. Soon after high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country proudly during WWII. Charley was able to meet up with his older brother Robert Unterreiner in Okinawa. Charley was preceded in death by his wife Doris Unterreiner, father, William Unterreiner, mother, Charlotte Unterreiner, and his brother, Robert Unterreiner. He is survived by Ruth Thomas, his daughter, Susan Gannon, two grandsons, Michael T. Gannon and Jeffrey Scott Gannon, along with six great-grandchildren, Casia Nicole Gannon, Dakotta Marie Gannon, Amaya Elisa Gannon, Dystanie Manae Gannon, Jeffrey Scott Gannon, Jr., and Riley Xavier Gannon. Charley is also survived by his sister-in-law Helen Unterreiner, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Charley’s time spent in the military included guarding and patrolling the Great Wall of China. He was so proud of his time serving his country, always wearing his military hat with pins at special events. Upon returning home, Charley continued serving others through his time as Grand Master of his lodge #820, the Masonic Board of Relief, Toys for Tots, Troop #1 Boy Scouts of America, and the American Legion. Charley also enjoyed the great outdoors, making 32 yearly trips to the Minnesota boundary water canoe area with his fishing friends and buddies. Charley was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by his family as well as by all who knew him. Funeral services for Mr. Unterreiner will be held at noon on Tuesday in the Southern Chapel of Arch L. Heady & Son, 3601 Taylor Blvd. Interment with military honors will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Mt. Washington. Visitation will be after 9 am on Tuesday at the funeral home.
