For a grateful nation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving overseas orders for Germany as a SPC 5 with the 14th Armored Calvary Regiment, performing NATO-reconnaissance and border patrol missions. Following his discharge from the Army, he earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting from Western Kentucky University in 1973, subsequently working for Louisville television station WDRB.
In the mid-1970s, he enlisted in the Navy, graduating from the Navy submarine school in Groton, CT and earning the rank of Petty Officer Third Class. He participated in nuclear deterrent patrols in the Atlantic as a crew member aboard the ballistic missile submarine USS Kamehameha (SSBN-642).
Upon his discharge from the Navy, he was hired by the Louisville VA Medical Center, who cared for him as employee and disabled veteran for all these many years. His family will forever appreciate the care provided to him by the staff of the VA Medical Center throughout his life, and in his last months, Baptist Hospital East, Richwood Nursing & Rehab, Norton’s Hospital, and Hosparus of Louisville.
He is survived by his mother, Beth; his son, Daniel, Jr.; three brothers, Tim [Jorunn], Don [Sandy] and Ron; and one sister, Carolyn Lanham [Taylor]. He was predeceased by his father, Merrill, and his sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Rusty Shelby. He will be missed by his extended family of nine nephews and nieces and eleven grand nephews and nieces. He leaves behind his best friend and younger brother, Ron, who steadfastly stood by him through the good times and the bad times. We are all better persons for having known this gentle soul.
