

David Michael Akers, age 78, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on May 15, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born on August 14, 1947, in Owensboro, Kentucky, to the late Roy Olin Akers and Jane Castlen Akers.
He was the beloved husband of Nancy Payne Akers for 57 years, the cherished father of Kristen Akers and J. T. (Joyce) Akers, and the proud grandfather of Krislen Ware, Grey James Akers, and Wolf Thomas Akers. He is also survived by his siblings Jack (Jean) Akers, Judy Villa, Rebecca Dully, Margaret Thurman, Patrick (Teri) Akers, and Kathleen Foster; his sisters-in-law, Nancy Akers and Beverly Akers; and many extended family members who held a special place in his heart.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Phillip Akers and John Akers; his sister, Janie Matthews; and his brothers-in-law, Joseph Villa, Frank Dully, Dennis Thurman, and David Foster.
David graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School with the Class of 1965, an accomplishment that reflected the strong foundation he carried throughout his life. He went on to build a respected career through his work at Quest and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, where he was known for his dedication and integrity. He also played an important role in helping initiate HIPAA in the Louisville area, contributing to work that had a lasting impact on healthcare and the community he served.
David attended St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, where his presence reflected his devotion and sense of belonging. His life was guided by a steady moral compass, and those who knew him will remember the kindness, patience, and wisdom he shared so freely.
David also gave generously of his time and heart beyond his career and family. In Owensboro, he participated in Junior Achievement, where he helped mentor high school students in learning how to operate a business. He found great meaning in encouraging young people and helping them gain confidence in their abilities. He was also a devoted soccer coach for his son, J. T., and treasured the opportunity to support him on and off the field.
Those who knew David will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor. He had a thoughtful spirit and a wise perspective that brought comfort and guidance to others.
His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the lives he influenced, and the example he set through a life of faith, service, and devotion.
