Esther Lively Cain, of Louisville, passed away Sunday, at the age of 85. Mrs. Cain was the daughter of Percy Lively Jr. and Marie Barrens Lively. She was a graduate of Central High School and attended the University of Louisville, where she met her husband, George. Mrs. Cain served the community as a pharmacy aide at Zegart's Drugstore, as an educator at Cochran Elementary, and later as a group health specialist for Anthem BCBS. Following her retirement in 2004, she enjoyed spending time nurturing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A devoted, long-standing member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mrs. Cain's life was rich in faith. She was a literary enthusiast, and former tennis athlete, who enjoyed watching football and other sports. Affectionately referred to as "Mama" or "Gram" by her family, she embodied the essence of a matriarch—radiating kindness and exhibiting the unparalleled patience of Job. Her absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege to know her.
Mrs. Cain is preceded in death by her husband George Cain. She is survived by her two daughters Gigi (Antonio) Fowler and Andréa (Michael) Griffith, three grandchildren Jillian (Derrick) Cain Drake, Jacqueline (Patrick) Taylor, and Alexander (Laranda) Fowler, and five great-grandchildren Jordan, Elijah, Myles, Amelia, and Lennox. She also leaves behind her two sisters, her brother, and a host of nieces, nephews, and loved ones.
In honoring Mrs. Cain's wishes, services will be private. The family will receive friends at a closed-casket memorial gathering on Monday, February 3rd from 4-6 PM at Evergreen Funeral Home on Preston. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that donations be made to a charity of your choosing, in her name, as a testament to her enduring legacy of generosity.
