Eugene was the oldest active licensed horseman in Kentucky. He was one of the top grooms on the Kentucky circuit, being best known for the grooming and handling of “Master Derby” winner of the 100th Preakness Stakes in 1975. He also rubbed top horses; “Run Dusty Run”, “Bob’s Dusty”, “Golden Derby “ , Smiley’s Dream”, “Five Star General” and “Spruce Needles”. He handled “Dark Mirage”, 1957 winner of the filly triple crown, and his own beloved “Alyrun”. He was employed by William E. “Smiley” Adams and in later years, Vickey Foley, Blackie Huffman and Martin Rouck.
Cremation was chosen, a memorial service will be scheduled at the Christ Chapel at Churchill Downs, where Eugene attended services, at a later date.
