Born in New York City on January 7, 1925, Flo was the daughter of the late Marion Harding Jenney and Lee Royal Jenney of Garden City, NY and Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, MA. She was a proud graduate of Emma Willard School in Troy, NY and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Following graduation from Skidmore in 1947, Flo returned to NYC, where she worked for Ginn & Co. Publishing until her June 1950 marriage to Walter Hume, Jr., a recent graduate of Harvard Medical School. They settled down for several years in Boston, where Walt completed his surgical residency program at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Flo was employed at Harvard Business School. After Boston, Walt was relocated by the Navy to the Fort Knox Army Hospital and later to the Portsmouth, VA Naval Hospital. Upon returning to civilian life, they settled again briefly in Boston before moving in 1958 to Walt’s hometown of Louisville, where Flo spent the remainder of her life.
In Louisville, Flo embraced life fully. Her favorite activities included tennis and table tennis, entertaining on their houseboat, playing bridge, singing, dancing, story-telling, vacationing at Martha’s Vineyard, supporting her children’s sports, and creating family photo albums. She was also a Stephen Minister and Elder at Second Presbyterian Church and a member of the J. B. Speed Art Museum, the Louisville Woman’s Club, the Jefferson County Medical Society Auxiliary, the Louisville Boat Club and the Louisville Country Club.
Flo was preceded in death by Walt, her husband of 53 years; her parents, Marion and Lee Jenney; her brothers, Ralph and Walter Jenney; and her sister-in-law, Marguerite Hume.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Brad (Glen), Craig (Michelle), and Sarah “Sally” Kooser (Bill); her grandchildren, Sara Gahan, Brittany Charm, Jennifer Nelson, Chad Hume, Allison Hastings, and Shannon Miller; and 16 great-grandchildren.
The family will have a private burial, and a celebration of life service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church at a later date.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to all of Flo’s caregivers at Sunrise of Louisville and Hosparus Health for their professional and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Second Presbyterian Church or Hosparus Health of Louisville, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
